    Rolex advice please (inherited watch)

My friend has inherited this watch from his grandfather, and is looking for more information on it (i.e. model, and estimated value for insurance purposes). He doesn't have original papers for it. His gran thinks it was bought in the 1940-50s.

    Thanks very much everyone! :)

Have you thought about asking over on the Vintage Rolex Forum? You might find the right calibre or expert over there.

FWIW (and it's not a lot because I am definitely not an expert), but every kosher Rolex dial that I have seen has always had the 'L' of Rolex centred under the crown. This dial doesn't have that. So it might not be all as it first appears, I'm afraid.

    Good luck with your research.

No, that's not correct, and the "L" looks fine to me...

OP, is there anything between the lugs?

The dial seems to be in cracking condition for a 65-75 year old watch. Looks lovely

Which would make me very wary of it being all original.
It's just a matter of time...

Wow this is a stunner. I have a 1940's Omega with a near identical dial.

Thanks very much for the info guys! I had also posted on The Rolex Watch forum (somewhere I had not visited since buying my SD some years ago), however I shall look at the Vintage Rolex Forum also.

Thanks too for the link Tony, I'll look at this now.

Edited: nice find with the link, Tony! My friend will be delighted to have even just this much information. Good idea about between the lugs: I'll ask him if he would feel comfortable removing the bracelet, or he could get a local jeweller to do it.

Great, and glad it was of help. You'll notice, actually, that the dial on the wat ch in the link has been refinished, and the "L" on that one (and the whole word, of course) is misaligned!

Ok. I have looked in Dowlings book and there is something very similar on Page 201 in gold. Model number 08/16 - however its an Oyster so not exactly the same.

It does however have the same Bombe lugs and same sub-dial at 6. The one shown is 1953 - which would make it a lot later than yours (1947 based on the serial number).

However I cannot find a similar dial - with Shock Resisting under the crown (normallly it is about the 6) or arround the subdial - hence like a few others would start thinking redial - and not a very good one.

Would it be possible to pop the back and take some pictures of the movement and inside the case back - this would help.

    Thanks Andy

Re: Rolex advice please (inherited watch)

I hope I'm wrong but I'm suspicious too. I've had a look through my big book of vintage Rolex and I can't see any watch with that case style. What's more worrying is the logo; there is not a single dial among the hundreds presented where the crown looks like that - the prongs are too long and the base just does not match any of the variations over the last 80 or 90 years.

As I say, I hope I'm wrong but that looks like a generic Swiss watch from the 40s or 50s that at some point in its life has had a little cosmetic surgery.

Thanks for all your help here, and the time you've spent looking into this. I really do appreciate it. :)

I shall see if my friend can get a photo of the movement (and between the lugs). He comes back from holiday tomorrow (and then I'm off to France on Saturday for 2 weeks), so I'll try and get these up this week (failing that when I get back from hols). I won't forget though.

The lugs on this model are called sabre lugs.
Mike Wood has had a couple for sale in the past.
Look here a little down the page.

Good spot - however I would still call them Bombe lugs :D

Even more convinced it has a redial in it.

I agree, the dial looks like it has been refinished.

Re: Rolex advice please (inherited watch)

My first thought after seeing the picture of the dial was that it had been repainted, and now having looked at it again I'm convinced (as it would appear are some others). As a relatively new WIS I'm no expert [particularly where Rolex is concerned] and I bow to the superior knowledge of the majority, but the finish on this Rolex REALLY reminded me of this JLC Triple Date that third time lucky posted about back in May, provoking some good humored debate about the subject of dial restoration IIRC.

Re: Rolex advice please (inherited watch)

Mike kindly gave his opinion on TVRF: he thinks it is original Rolex, except that the dial has been repainted. Value around £2k for insurance purposes. I shall pass this onto my friend.

When my friend gets round to taking a photo of the movement, I'll post it up.

    Thanks again.
