Anyone watched any good movies recently?

Hacksaw Ridge - One of the best I've seen this year

    Arrival - Also very good

Jason Bourne, decent film. Not up to the trilogy as the plot was tighter and more believable in the trilogy. There was more of a sense of urgency and drawing in to the story then this one. Still a watchable film.

I watched The Hateful Eight yesterday as an antidote to all the Christmas TV guff and really enjoyed it.

    Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Jane Austin meets World War Z

Most of the books dialogue retained, gentile ladies trained in the martial arts, heaving bosoms, tight corsets and swords

A zombie apocalypse film for those with more refined tastes

    Marvellous

I would like to see a Wuthering Heights version

Just watched Edge of tomorrow. Never watched it around its release as a few people said it wasn't up to much.

    Really enjoyed it.

Yes, it's far too good for a Tom Cruise film. Cheap shots aside, he actually isn't bad in it, and does a convincing turn as a coward. Plus, Emily Blunt.

Four of us went to see "Passengers" yesterday. Our consensus opinion: Pretty Good. Whomever created the sets and the special effects deserve Oscars!

Its the best Ben Affeck movie in a long time. He needed something to distract people from that shockingly bad Batman movie.

I enjoyed this too. I'm a fan of Jeff Bridges even though he kinda plays the same person in every movie. Chris Pine is good also.

I agree. I really enjoyed it. You would wonder if that sort of pressure (from the oil companies) is put on the guys normally or was it dramatised for the movie.

    POSSIBLE SPOILER

I can imagine there's massive amounts of pressure from the big oil companies. I do think that it was possible simplified for the film though. Health and safety is the main player in these industries level with duty of care and carbon offset.
It must have been a horrific experience to part of though and I don't doubt for the sake of the families involved that some of the scenes have also been diluted.
Nice touch at the end to commemorate those that didn't make it.

Personally only a 5/10, great special effects, but considering the events that followed the platform disaster, court cases, clean up, blame game, etc. etc. the film felt only half finished to me.

I just watched A Field in England

Stunning monochrome imagery, interesting and very different from the Hollywood fare.

Maybe not for everyone, but warrants a post here IMHO.

Watched Passengers today and really enjoyed it, not especially challenging but a decent way to spend a couple of hours. Found the 2 hrs ish flew by, the 2 leads were really good (lucky as they kind of had to carry the movie!) and the effects and sets looked stunning.

Today I watched a documentary film about Usain Bolt. Highly recommended.

And Bolt's watch box is featured in the film!

I watched A Prophet this morning. It was a very, very good film despite its 3+ hours run time. It is a French Film though so subtitles are present but you should never let that put you off a film in my experience.

Surprised by the opinions on the accountant. I thought average at best, with poor twists.

I really liked suicide squad, not as funny as the laughs in Deadpool, but an easy entertaining watch.

Despite certain misgivings I watched the new version of Ghostbusters earlier this evening.

    I liked it.

Not only did I find all of the women rather attractive, I thought it was funny and reverential to the original.

We watched it recently too, some great one liners and loved all the cameos from the original cast.

Rewatched Close encounters of the third kind again too, forgot how good it was.

I watched Girl on the Train with SWMBO last night. It isn't a classic, but a decent enough Sunday evening watch.

Watched The Magnificent 7 last night and enjoyed it, even the kids who spent all of the holidays delaying watching it enjoyed it.

Watched Suicide Squad a few days ago and loved it.

My kids are doing a Harry Potter back to back and am not enjoying that

I gave this Tarantino western a go. Its over 3 hours long and the first couple of hours seem to be story line. I went from thinking I'm not liking this to wow, what a movie in the 3 hours. Its got some familiar faces in it and I would not want to have missed it. Cinematography is classic.

If you haven't seen it already I would urge everyone to watch The King of Comedy. It's a masterpiece.

I would also highly recommend Wag The Dog.

I watched this last night after reading your scant review and you seriously undersold it. Great story, great acting especially Ben A, rather witty and a good ending. Made John Wick look a bit meh!
