Thanks - I'll try to track that down. There's a modest monument to Bernardo just around the corner from our apartment.

Also thought Embrace of the Serpent excellent.
Is there a small bust of O'Higgins in Richmond ?

Bugger me - so there is. I must have a look at that next time I'm down there.

My word, you learn something new every day. Unfortunately I do forget twice as much though.

Thanks for the MUBI invitation, C-B. I really enjoyed Further Beyond and the eclectic selection is right up my street.

When you're back in Terra Madre make sure you have a go on it without using a VPN; you get a different selection according to the country and it expands the choice available. Obviously, though, you'll have less stuff with English subtitles but that won't matter if its' English/American/Australian etc.

Do NOT watch this movie unless you are an artistic foo-foo with at least a masters degree in film! "Certain Women" scored four out of four stars in the San Diego newspaper, and very highly by almost all film critics. Although its Rotten Tomatoes score is around 90, the Audience score is 50. I don't know how many years it has been since I have seen such a miserable movie! The pacing is like watching paint dry, there is NO plot, no nothing. WATCH THIS MOVIE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Well I'm certainly a man of my word- as soon as i'd finished work and the film was on general release, i was there popcorn in hand watching Hacksaw Ridge.

Good to see Mel back in the driving seat, cinematography was amazing, great subject matter, made even more impressive by the fact that it's a true story, every member of the cast put in solid performances.

Very impressive film, well worth a viewing, especially on the big screen.

    Train to Busan.
This is a Korean movie. I'm a fan of the Zombie movie genre. I watched this one last night. It won't appeal to everyone but I enjoyed it.

Just watched Queen Mimi. A documentary about a woman who lived in a laundromat in Santa Monica for 20yrs. Was a great watch.

  21. #3471
Last two I've watched were Bridge of Spies and Louis Theroux's Scientology movie.

    Bridge of Spies was great.

The other was odd. Not bad. Just odd.

Confirmed that scientologists are bonkers though

Just seen Repulsion (1965) again after many years - a masterpiece.

Directed by Roman Polanski and starring Catherine Deneuve who is just so supremely watchable.

A sometimes harrowing tale of a young woman's descent into madness.

    Cheers,
    Neil.

I watched The Imitation Game last night.

Cucumber patch was good in the role i thought.

Worth a look and no Americans captured a single Enigma machine 😁

Hypernormalisation, dir by Adam Curtis, is a thought-provoking documentary that tries and, I think, succeeds in explaining much of the world's political, religious and financial journey over the past 40 years.

Watched Supersonic last night. Absolutely loved it. As a big fan of Oasis, it was interesting to watch and see a number of things that I wasn't aware of. Also now totally get why they never really broke America.

    cracking soundtrack as well

    Café Society

I watched this Woody Allen movie last night. It has a good cast (Jessie Eisenberg, Steve Carell, Blake Lively, Kirsten Stewart). It's set in 1930's Hollywood & New York.
I enjoyed it. It's not a great movie but it's definitely not a bad movie. Here's the trailer and have a look for yourself.

Haha, fair one. Nothing too full on...more of a slow burner with plenty of suspense, with a couple of good shocks thrown in.

  31. #3481
    I watched Arrival last night.

Beautiful film, certainly not your typical Sci-Fi flick. Amy Adams was superb, this girl can do no wrong. Good performance by Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker was superb as always- good to see him back on the big screen.

Thoroughly entertaining from start to finish

  32. #3482
^^^ Good to hear. Liked the trailer when I was at the cinema a few weeks back, so looking forward to it now.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of seeing the film The Battle of the Somme in the courtyard of the Deutsches Historisches Museum with a live symphony orchestra. It's a 74 minute documentary shot during the battle itself and released at the time primarily as a propaganda tool. It has been remastered in recent times by the Imperial War Museum who also commissioned an accompanying score by Laura Rossi (it being a silent film, obviously).

The aim is for this to tour extensively so I would definitely make the time if you get the chance to go.

Went with the wife yesterday to see a "street cat named bob", surprisingly good, not great but a fine way of whiling away a cold December afternoon.

I was surprised how good the cats were in it. My wife commented how close to the book the film was, which is unusual in its self.

Took my teenage son to see Dr Strange over the weekend. I'm starting to get a bit jaded with Marvel superhero movies, but we both really enjoyed it. Has a fantastic wis scene involving multiple watchwinders too 😎

Watched this with some mares and a few beers last week. Was never a fan of oasis or blur, more of a soul & clubbing type but thoroughly enjoyed this. What a pair of arseholes, but really funny and warts and all enjoyable.

I watched Zero Dark Thirty over the weekend. Brilliant! Like a grown up Homeland, but so much better.

Female director as well, which is unusual for a military film, although she has previous with The Hurt Locker.

Another recommendation for Arrival. Best film of the year. A clever, sensitive, subtle, intelligent sci-fi film at last, with an award-worthy central performance from Any Adams.

  47. #3497
I've recently watched 'The Big Short' which was an interesting and entertaining film.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Started off setting the scene and character but spent too long on it. It was a pleasant walk through the character and his beasts but I was wanting a plot. The plot did take off and it was pretty good but not a wow film. It became very dark in places. Probably a bit too dark for kids compared with the cuteness of the beasts them selves. My friend really like it though.

Enjoyable and well constructed universe to expand the "Harry Potter" franchise but not a wow film.

And she directed the original "point break"
