Finally got around to seeing The Revenant.
Thought the story was OK and interesting, as it's loosely based on real events, but not riveting.
Cinematography though was outstanding, and above all the performances I thought were excellent.
    Solid film - worth watching.

Two movies I enjoyed watching recently.
    The Finest Hours

IMO the original is better Infernal Affairs, The Departed is a very good film but I think the Hong Kong version is much more believable and grittier.

Just like La Femme Nikita (original) and the remake The Point of no Return/The Assassin.

Straight Outta Compton - enjoyable, even if it did play out a bit like a TV movie (with added swearing, of course).

I watched the two Mesrine films the other night – Mesrine: Killer Instinct and Mesrine: Public Enemy Number 1. Vincent Cassell plays the eponymous Mesrine. Both were superb and based on the true story of the French gangster.

I'm going to have to watch La Haine again now as I'd forgotten how good Cassel is.

Great actor, great films. Have you seen him in 'Irreversible'?

I suggest you do not watch it with your other half, the beautiful Monica Bellucci (Cassel former spouse) is in this film but that is not the reason why as I do not want to spoil the film for you.

Just to be clear, 'Irreversible' has teeth. It is a very tough watch and is not the type of film to go to casually. However, it is superb and genuinely thought provoking but I wouldn't watch it with an unsuspecting partner unless you were reasonably certain that they are 'extreme cinema' literate so to speak.

Saw Welcome To Collinwood the other night.

Enjoyed this tale of a bunch of losers trying to pull off a heist.

Good cast including George Clooney, William H Macy etc and well worth the 90 minutes spent.

I often think films nowadays are bloated and overlong and this was a perfect antidote.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Elysium - Follow up (but not a sequel) to District 9 (which I think is an excellent film).

I quite enjoyed it, but it did suffer from its Hollywood budget, by comparison with D9.

    7/10.

Yeah, i found irreversible a bit disturbing, if you do watch it, make sure you watch the beginning a 2nd time.

I thought Cassel was good in 'La Haine' not seen that for years, may have to revisit it

I had low expectations of this film, but it's really good.

High Rise (based on the JG Ballard novel).
Wanted to see what director Ben Wheatley could do with a bigger budget, having loved Kill List and Sightseers.
To be honest, I was a little disappointed even though it well cast and well acted. Just didn't feel as sharp as his earlier films.

Rescue Dawn on the TV the other night, enjoyed it.

Christian Bale as a US Navy pilot who gets shot down in the early part of the Vietnam war whilst illegally bombing Laos.

Captured and imprisoned, the story centres on his escape.

    Based on a true story.

'My Cousin Vinny' just cropped up on Netflix. Hadn't seen it for 20 years so I thought it was time to give it another look. Still very enjoyable, especially Marisa Tomei. Fun fact: the judge is played by Fred Gwynne - Herman Munster, no less.

I watched an outstanding new film today: Money Monster starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts; directed by Jodie Foster.

I watched "there will be blood" last night. I've watched a few times but only last night did it dawn on me how good of an actor Daniel day Lewis really is.

Cracking film and even better acting.

Watch it! It's on Netflix now ;)

Fred Gwynne looks like Herman Munster even without the make up!

Prisoners with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhall- not you're usual Jackman film , all about a child abduction case.
+1 to Zero Dark Thirty- very good film that kept as close to the factual events as possible( not like lone Survivor)

    Great thread :).

    Recently watched:

    Bridge of spies
    The Martian
    The Revenant
    Spotlight.
Hateful 8 - which I've not managed all the way through yet...

I've worked through the last 20 or so pages of this thread - but if anyone can recommend something especially good, it'd be appreciated

    Action/thriller/fantasy/adventure/cop/crime - all appeal.

I don't have Sky. But have Netflix and Amazon Prime

Eye in the Sky, Helen Mirrens latest. Its about drones in Africa, killing terrorists, pretty predictable but enjoyable.
