So have you read Robert Harris' Fatherland, which starts from a similar premise? There was also a made for TV movie with Rutger Hauer.

Yes I think I have some time ago, but sorry I meant I have read many non-fiction books.

It's ok, not great and I'm up to episode 5. Yes nazis/Japanese are nasty etc, but was expecting much more. Perhaps I'll watch another couple of episodes, see if things pick up.

I watched the first 2 episodes this evening and thought it quite good - good attention to detail and some nice touches. As usual with these US series they have to spin them out quite a bit so its pretty slow paced

I did keep wondering why San Fransisco (under Japanese occupation) was full of Citroen 2CV's and german bubble cars though

I read the original Philip K Dick novel years ago and thought it excellent

Slow West last night, worth a watch IMO.

Really nicely shot, some of the views are amazing.

'A Matter of Life and Death' on DVD. Classic British Cinema at its best. Most of the films from Powell and Pressburger are breath taking, especially when Jack Cardiff does the principal photography.

Inception is my favourite from the last few years. Chris Nolan is a great director.

    +1000!

Saul was one of the few things i liked about Breaking Bad, which I found an ok watch but nothing special, and a bit of a drag at times.

Better Call Saul however was fantastic!

    Just finished Mr Holmes

Another fantastic role by Sir Ian McKellen, I really liked this take on aging Holmes, it stayed true to the character yet exploring something new

    Enjoyed The Man from Uncle.

Focus was poor - Will Smith must be one of the worst actors out there.

    He's an actor?

In all seriousness, if you think he is bad, watch his son. Every film I have seen him in, I've wanted him to be maimed or killed.

As is the norm I watch most of my films on transatlantic flights. I watched Amy (about Amy Winehouse) and it is a compelling if somewhat tragic film. While people are ultimately responsible for their own actions she was very poorly managed and looked after.

Watched Mission To Lars last night on Netflix; great feature length documentary about a man with Fragile X Syndrome and an obsession with the drummer from Metalica. On the face of it, it might sound heavy-going, but it's lovely: funny, heart warming and life affirming.

Watched Cocaine Cowboys on Netflix yesterday - a really captivating documentary about the cocaine trade in Miami in the 1980's.

At the weekend, we watched The Beat That My Heart Skipped. From 2005, French, different, and interesting.

    Best wishes,

I watched Ex Machina last night...

Very thought-provoking film about the Turing Test, Artificial Intelligence, and whether (or not) computers could ever become sentient.
Good twist at the end, and Alicia Vikander isn't bad to look at

I agree. I actually think BB is a bit overrated, something people have latched onto as a cool thing to say they watch. Saul was a great character and the spin off has been v good.

Saw Speilberg's latest true story masterpiece The Bridge of Spies last night.

I mostly watch movies on the telly or on BluRay/DVD. Some friends think my tastes are a bit strange (horror, SF, film noir, western) but I like it.

One of the Dutch commercial stations regularly has interesting choices, which recently included these I enjoyed:

Rare Exports, a great alternative story about Father Christmas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1401143/),

Iron Sky: Nazis from the moon! - but much better and more intelligent than that sounds (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1034314/)

    and

30 Days Of Night, for those who like vampires (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389722/).

On Sunday we watched a delightful Iranian children's film called Children of Heaven (on Mubi). Made in 1997 though you'd think it's from the sixties; it's a simple tale told very well. Its' coverage on IMDB suggests that it probably has cult status in the country of origin.

I am ambivalent about Coin Farell to be honest*, but seeing Mad Eye Moody and Lord Voldemort together was a hoot. I absolutely love Ralph Fiennes - got to be one of the very best (British) actors of all time.

    * I must say the slightly comical edge with which he played this particular role was very well done and balanced very well against the darkness and seriousness of the rest of the acting.

Fantastic film - cant believe I've had it for so long and only just got around to watching it!

Went to see Star Wars last night - I felt like I was 9 again waiting to see Return of the Jedi.
We went to the local independant cinema - very 80's feel to it which added to the nostalgia.
JJ Abrams has done an excellent job - look & feel of the original trilogy (apparently shot on 35mm film and not digital), decent story - enjoyed it.

Just got back from the cinema. Great to see the new film not relying on cgi too much.

Me too. Just me and the Mrs last night but will probably take my little boy to watch it again in the Xmas hols.

I can seriously see this breaking the 2.7 billion mark and overtaking Avatar as the biggest grossing film ever. :-)

The thing is, there IS lots of cgi in it but it's been filmed sympathetically with real backdrops and real sets (they even built a millennium falcon!) and the cgi never feels intrusive.

I personally hated the crazy light saber battles in the prequels (except perhaps darth maul at the end of phantom) and yoda's/Christopher Lee's was particularly stupid!

I'm gonna go watch it again at the cinema between xmas and new year, which will be the first time I've watched a film twice upon release since se7en.
