Went to see '71 at the Tyneside Cinema this afternoon; talk about tension!
Dallas Buyers Club - excellent
American Hustle - meh
Went to see '71 at the Tyneside Cinema this afternoon; talk about tension!
Just watched The Driver (1978) on TCM - Ryan O'Neal, Isabelle Adjani, Bruce Dern. Top stuff.
Pans Labyrinth - in Spanish without formal subtitles, so you need to select subtitles on the DVD unless you speak Spanish... Anyway, great film! Well worth the 0.01p it cost me (+£1.26 postage)...
I believe Kermode rates this very highly
The Judge was enjoyable enough and isn't in 3D.
I'm watching brain dead.
Hilarious 😂
Fury is outstanding.
Brutal, moving and very, very tense.
Don't expect Saving Private Ryan…it's much better than that.
Watched gone girl last night, that was really good!
I'm currently going through a seventies car movie phase; after The Driver last week, I've just watched Vanishing Point. Betcha didn't remember that the blind DJ was played by Cleavon 'Blazing Saddles' Little or that Charlotte Rampling was in it.
Next up - Two Lane Blacktop.
Gone girl is excellent
Ditto the Gone Girl comments great film, love the way it unfolded
recommended
Grand Budapest Hotel
Jiro Dreams of Sushi
Sex Tape
I watched Stonehearst Asylum aka Eliza Graves last night. It had a great cast and good story with a few twists and turns.
I watched The Wonder Boys whilst on holiday last month which was absolutely superb. Apparently it bombed when it came out which is perhaps not that surprising as I would never have thought that Douglas would make that kind of movie and perhaps expectations were skewed a little.
We watched Carnage which I thought showed promise in the first half but then went for an easy plot twist with the opening of a bottle of whiskey. The tension as 2 couples who are clearly on different wavelengths parry begins really well and makes the viewer somewhat discomforted but it turns into the interaction between 4 drunk people in the end. Definitely a missed opportunity.
Also really enjoyed 5 Broken Cameras.
And another vote for Marvellous - the story of Neil from Keele. One of the best thing I've seen in ages.
In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.
Recommend 'All is lost'. Considering it is a film with only one actor, no particular plot and no dialogue it is excellent!!
Just seen Fury, one of the better movies I have seen this year!
I've just watched a Jersey Boys, the story of Franky Valli and the Four Seasons.
Most enjoyable.
The Goonies has just finished. Best film ever......
Lucy...good film for 1st 40mins then goes too weird.
The Chinese gansters make it.
Better Living Through Chemistry - quite a good indie black comedy. Sam Rockwell, as ever, is excellent.
Maleficent - enjoyable Disney family film. SFX/sets/costumes make it lovely to look at.
Saw Black Snake Moan last night and really enjoyed it.
Set in the deep south, Christina Ricci is a sex obsessed young tart and Samuel L Jackson (an old bluesman) tries to cure her.
Cheers,
Neil.
Deliver us from evil.
Decent horror film 👍
Gone Girl was excellent as others have said
I have the film "Seve" but don't think I'll be able to get through it without bubbling.
We watched American Hustle over the weekend, much better on the TV at home rather than on an airplane where we first saw it.
Watched "the frozen ground" and it was very good as noted earlier.
Distinct lack of Nicolas cage overacting......
I thought Calgary with Brendan gleeson was pretty good.
FURY - great film, though a little unrealistic in that it follows the usual Hollywood trend where during battle scenes 1000 Germans die for every American, despite the odds.
Other than this, i thought it was a great little war film - very gritty and very good special affects - the flying bullets and shells were scary!
Margin Call (DVD) - really enjoyed this, but I have an odd interest in all things "financial crash". Very well acted and directed, I think.
Currently watching the Johnny Depp version of "Sweeney Todd" on DVD - a musical, but very dark and Victorian in that Tim Burton / Johnny Depp way that you can imagine is just wonderfully perverse and dark. Seems like a great film, though I am only half watching it.
Downhill is an excellent take on the midlife crisis. Superb Brit movie, with the excellent Karl Theobald.
£1.99 rental on iTunes at the moment.
Does anyone have any thoughts on Black Swan?
I thought it was bloody brilliant. Very dark, good subtext, well written and superbly acted by Natalie Portman. A film I will definitely need / want to watch 2 or 3 times to really feel all of it.
The Artist.
Wow. Just wow!
My immediate reaction (just finished watching it 5 mins ago) is that this is my favourite film of all time (ok, top 5 at least).
Wow!
I thought the Judge was quite good..
Watched The Babadook last night, superb horror, one of the best in recent years. Really messed with my head and is still with me this morning!!
Cabin In The Woods has a terrestrial premiere on Channel 5 at 9.00. If you like a horror film with a difference this is for you!

Yes, we enjoyed this as well. It's quite something to keep the audience's attention for nearly 2 hours. (Locke achieved a similar feat).
Apparently, the hardcore sailors have mocked the realism somewhat, but it's a good piece of fiction all the same!
Added: His SKX009 performed abmirably throughout his ordeal!

I watched Come home lassie (1943).
Great
