    Love and Mercy

Kind of biopic about Brian Wilson. Switches between the earlyish days/recording of Pet Sounds and more recent times where he was under the spell of Eugene Levy. Works well swapping between them and I liked the 'studio' scenes about the music creation behind that classic album.

    Really enjoyed it.

We caught up with a couple of films over the weekend, I enjoyed The Banshees of Inisherin but she hated it.
Going on the recommendations on here we watched Everything Everywhere All At Once, errrm… probably best to watch that after being down the pub, or just give it a pass.
Sunday evening she said she was in the mood to watch an old Disney film so I suggested Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, wonderful! It made up for the other two.

Went to the cinema to see A Man Called Otto. Mrs H and I loved it though it was a poor voice for our teenage sons.

Mrs. PC and I saw Bill Nighy in Living, for which he has been Oscar nominated for Best Actor. Very different, cerebral type of film, but I really enjoyed it and it had me thinking all the way home!

"Le Mans 66" is a really good watch.

I found it an excellent film, based on a true story, with no doubt with a bit of hollywood shizzle thrown in for good measure.

I saw it on amazon a few times now.

love the way Henry Ford II nearly soils himself when Carol Shelby (Matt Damon) takes him for a test drive in the GT40 development car on the airfield track.

    Ditto.

Perfect end to a pretty horrible week but this film was so uplifting. Recommended

Just watched The Worricker Trilogy mini series for the nth time.
Really well done with Bill Nighy, Rachel Weisz, Ralph Fiennes.
Cast is excellent with a script to die for.

We've just watched Where the Crawdads Sing as my wife recently read the book. Reviews aren't especially favourable but I really enjoyed it.

Yes, an enjoyable (not particularly funny, though, if that's what you're after) film.

Also watched Infiesto - Spanish detective movie set during the early days of the COVID pandemic. Interesting if only to remember the fear of the unknown and chaos we had back then.

One of Hopkins best, I think.

    Predetermination on ITVx.

Excellent 'make you think' sci-fi rather than space ships and aliens.

Out of interest, ITVx has an excellent interface (as good as Netflix, Prime etc) and a good selection of stuff to watch for the price of a few not too intrusive adverts.

I find Netflix and Prime to have horrible interfaces for finding stuff.

Netflix seems to continually offer the same films under different categories.

The new Prime auto-expanding thing is horrible.

Try typing a random word into search, and you'll see lots of suggested stuff that would otherwise not be shown. You'll still see the same old 'every category' stuff, but some other stuff as well.

Completely agree, it gets so frustrating unless you know a film you want to look.

Equally 'because you watched' despite turning it off after 15mins, get some proper AI/ML !!

War Dogs with Jonah Hill, Ana de Armas, and Miles Teller.

Excellent crazy caper, based on a true story about a dodgy arms procurement contract to the US Army.

    I thought well worth watching.

Top Gun 2 - awesome film

We just saw Tom Hanks in A Man Called Otto at the cinema. I'm not the biggest Hanks fan, but this film was excellent!

  33. #7483
Aftersun. Slow paced but beautiful film, left me in absolute bits. Those of you with daughters and/or who experienced specific events in childhood will relate. Bit marmite, Mrs MM hated it, but she thinks The Notebook is an Oscar-worthy masterpiece, go figure.

Half an hour into The Best Years of out Lives, 1946, I can't wait for the next 2 and a half, but, tomorrow will have to do.

I watched The Long Good Friday last week and thought it was excellent. I’d never seen it before but thought it has such a good plot still and some very early famous names!

An absolute classic. If you haven't seen it yet Mike Hodges 'Get Carter' should be next on your watch list.

  37. #7487
All Quiet on the Western Front was awful. Relentlessly and repulsively gory, unredeemingly depressing. A kind of non-story, just a plodding, slow, dull descent into hell.

Saving Private Ryan without the heart.

In a not dissimilar vein albeit they're more recent movies, might I suggest 'Gangster No. 1' and 'The Limey', as being worth a viewing.

Both superb films 'The Limey' ---- 'Terence Stamp' sublime.

recently watched 'The Menu' great edge of seat stuff

and "Triangle of Sadness" - hilarious and dark in equal measures.

Bravely watched Tár last night to see what the fuss was about, Mondays being half price at the local. Quite hard going, and I’d still have got the point if it was a good hour shorter. And yet I’m forced to admit it’s objectively ‘good’, for its performances, photography, and cerebral take on our times. It might appeal if you’re far too clever for mere entertainment, though personally I’m partial to it.

    The Searchers. John Wayne classic.
Never even heard of it before, watched it last night.

    A masterpiece - I loved it.

I assume the new remake of All quiet on the Western front has already been mentioned?

    Also outstanding.
