We watched Jack Reacher tonight, I thought it was pretty good, spotted a Aquaracer 500M and a TH Carrera as well.
i dont normally go for the post modern psychosocial kitsch pomp pistachio noir that comprises the oeuvre of wes anderson, but i saw half of moonrise kingdom tonight and it was fairly watchable

Yes a good movie that I think I will watch again at some point. I still much prefer the orphanage and was hoping for this one to be as good.

Just watched "The Place beyond the Pines" proper American Gothic Not an easy film though- lots of layers and not much of a plot to hook onto. Interestingly the music's by Mike Patton (Faith No More anyone?)
I've only ever seen it when its been leaked on YouTube- The DVD rights went into a black hole for ten years but now they have been sorted so I looking forward to getting it on disc. Its barely a film though- sunrise, empty Paris, massive engine noise, the wierd falling sensation. I've since found its well known in modern art circles as a balls-out piece of installation art.

The opening title states that the film was made without special effects and was not speeded up. As far as I know it was filmed with a camera fixed to the front of a Mercedes saloon and the sound of a Ferrari was added afterwards.

Wow, just WOW! Feast for the eyes and the ears, the score is sublime 80s (courtesy of Daft Punk), and the visuals, just beautiful. If, like me, you were a kid seeing the 1982 original, then you will surely enjoy this puppy.
Oh, and it's got the gorgeous Olivia Wilde
Just got back from watching Iron Man 3, and it really blew me away!
Much better than I was expecting.
Stunning visual effects, obviously a huge budget spent on the effects, but absolutely great to watch on an Imax screen in 3d.
Had me laughing out loud in parts too!
For me, the best Iron man yet.

More obscure early sci-fi that had a role in shaping more famous movies. Not as clear an influence as the Alien background ones, but these were studied by Stanley Kubric while he was planning 2001- A Space Odyssey.
First, Planeta Bur, 1961 from Soviet Russia:
..and the East German/Polish 1960 Der Schweigende Stern:
Both plots centre on trips to Venus and are interestingly serious, with lots of time given to long space journeys, the use of robots/computers and plenty of philosophising on man's place in the universe, etc.
Footage from both films was also used in several less memorable US remakes/adaptations:
Planeta Bur bacame Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet and the even less memorable Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women in the late 1960s.
Der Schweigende Stern became First Spaceship on Venus in 1962, a much shorter film with about 25 minutes of footage removed by the US censors (thanks to the anti-communist times) and considerably changed plot and characterisation.

As I seem to have woken in a slightly grumpy mood, I'll take the opportunity to point out that as an Englishman, I watch films rather than movies.
"Miss Bala", about a beauty queen caught up with the Mexican drug cartels. Very realistic, intense & fast-paced. Recommended!
And I'll point out that as a Scotsman I watch filums.

Just about to watch LA Confidential again on dvd. Excellent film. Like the mood. The only thing that spoils it is that any time I see Kevin Spacey, I think of him playing with himself in the shower in American Beauty. Can't take him seriously after that !

Just watching 'Mr Blandings builds his dream house' with Cary Grant and Myrna Loy. Made in 1948 but remarkably fresh comedy.
LA confidential, great film, one of my favourites of recent times.
Playing with himself or notKS is a great actor.
The two Ockers are pretty fair in it as well.

Bit of a retro one... saw it two decades ago as a teen, being fed on John Hughes comedies thought it was way too dark and boring, but now 20 years later found it rather interesting. A lot of it reminiscence of the 80s and my youth I suppose, but still some great performances esp. Robert Downey Jr.

Fantastic movie and and one EVERY teenagaer should watch, IMO. I saw it for the first time my senior year in high school as a part of one of my classes. I remember thinking afterwards, "Man... I am NEVER trying drugs". 27 years later, still good on that promise to myself.
Just watched 'Ted'. Not so bad at all. Had a quite a few lines that had my in tears laughing.
Watched Olympus has fallen last night.
Really enjoyed it, thought Gerry Butler was pretty good.

I agree that Jack Reacher was much better than expected. A well executed popcorn movie. (I can't quite think of a "Jack Reacheround" gag)!
Enjoyed Iron Man 3 - very funny and for 80% of its duration sort of in the same (not totally ridiculous) kinda vein of the first one. The finale goes crazy in a Avengers sort of way which didnt appeal to me and let it down a bit. Good movie but could have been really good.
Has Downey Jr signed up for a 4th?

Just watched Planet Ocean the documentary movie by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, sponsored by Omega, the film that inspired the new Planet Ocean GMT released at Basel.
Outstanding, brilliant cinematography, highly recommend, like a whole series of David Attenbrough programmes all crammed into one film.
The American commentary was at times a little annoying, felt like it lost something in translation from the original French, or it may have been a little 'dumbed down' for the US market, but don't let that put you off.

Another great 'use the kids as an excuse' movie. Took our 13 year old to Star Trek: Into Darkness last night.
Absolutely, stonkingly brilliant. Especially if you grew up with Star Trek, as I did. Loved every minute of it.
Who cares what the 13 year old thought? (He loved it too, BTW.)

Saw 'Mud' last night ,very good,would rcommend.
We saw this the other day. I think they (nearly) always manage to give the Star Trek movies that bit extra which elevates them above more run-of-the-mill sci-fi, and this one was very good IMO. I also liked the references back to the previous movies which will please older viewers, and also shows that the "reboot" seems to be working well. (I'll avoid any spoilers there).
"Parker" with Jason Statham is worth a watch.

Was the first of the new Star Trek movies any good?
Enjoyed Iron Man 3 too with my 6 yr old son. However I wouldn't bother with it in 3D - it was hardly worth the hassle and IMO would have been better appreciated in 2D.
I don't think that there will be a 4th - though never say never. Downey will be in the next Avengers film out next year(?).

Yes, it had some similar references to the original series/films that went down very well. Worth watching as well.
I also just saw The Impossible - very well done, without being too sentimental IMO - captured the devastation on both the large and small scale. Although I couldn't help thinking "which watch would I want to have on if I was caught in a tsunami"? (Subc in case anyone's wondering).
Just watched Star Trek into darkness. I'm not a fan of old Trek stuff but these new one I've enjoyed very much.
This second new Trek film was excellent. Cumberbatch is a damn good bad guy.

I have just watched a Danish film called Blinkende Lygter aka Blinking Lights. It has a few familiar faces in it with the lead woman from the killing, the Hannibal TV actor who was also the baddie in Casino Royale and one of the leads from Kingdom another great Danish drama. I thought it was very well done and an enjoyable watch, one that I 'd view again. For those that do subtitles do search it out.

Just watched 'Alex Cross' aparently pretty close to the book (according to James Patterson himself!). Thought it was pretty good. More action than the Morgan Freeman offerings.
