I watched Lincoln last week, and that was absolutely brilliant providing you like very wordy films. In terms of visual acting, there wasn't much, but that didn't matter.

Last night, I went to see Wreck It Ralph with a few friends and actually really enjoyed it!

Anyone watched any good movies recently?

I watched From Paris with love the other evening. Quite entertaining & enjoyable for a 'leave your brain at the door' movie.

Cockneys vs Zombies, if Tarantino ever makes a zombie movie, it will not be as good as this.

A little bit 28 Days, a little bit Kill Bill, with shades of Lock Stock, and def Honor Blackmans best role since 'Pussy Galore'.

Best british movie for a long time, loved it.

Dexter is one of the best things currently on TV IMO. They've possibly toned down the "darkness" a little bit in the later series, but it's still brilliant. It's back on in a couple of weeks!

Recently watched a French film, prison drama called "The Prophet". Probably one of the best movies I've seen in a while.

Anyone watched any good movies recently?

As Amazon kindly delivered my Blu ray early, I finally got around to seeing Skyfall. Really enjoyed it, and nice to see Bond modeling my (most likely) next watch purchase for me.

    Zero Dark Thirty - 8/10.
Pitch Perfect (ahem) - 7/10 (hilarious).
Flight - 9/10 - Typical flawless performance by Denzel.

Most recently watched Zero Dark Thirty at the cinema and watched the remake of Total Recall on a flight from Honolulu to Houston last week. I'd read that the remake is closer to the book than the Arnie version and I really enjoyed it.

Saw that in Cinema, a stark reality of the mafia , especially compared to all the glizty suits and Cadillacs of Yank movies. Good film.

Yesterday I watched "The Descendants" and it's a pretty good film. Good script, well written ; actors are good too, even the youngsters (which is quite rare, in fact).

A few days ago, I watched for the nth time "The Shawshank redemption". I'm a big fan of it and I'm never disappointed.

A few weeks ago I watched "Source Code" directed by Duncan Jones, British director (whose father is famous). Not perfect but entertaining. "Moon" was quite interesting too, by the way.

And recently I watched (indeed for the nth time again) two movies from French director Alain Resnais : "Smoking/No Smoking" which are amongst my favorites ever. They're based on the play(s) "Intimate exchanges", written by Alan Ayckbourn. The French adaptation is very good and faithful to the original. These movies are simply great. A kind of perfect "Entente cordiale"

Complicit- on Channel 4, probably still available on 4OD. A suspected terrorist is monitored by an agent for MI5, who has to decide if he should break the rules to get the outcome that he wants. Very well written and Excellent lead performances make this a film that you will think about after you've seen it!

Just watched "Searching for sugar man" more a documentary than a film. Absolutely brilliant, and I've even bought the CD of a singer I'd never heard of.

Total Recall - it was ok but nothing special tbh

I watched the remake of Red Dawn last night, it was watchable but not a patch on the original.

I can recommend Flight, not what I was expecting but quite a decent film.

I also saw the trailer for World War Z today, I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to this film, despite it having Brad Pitt as the main character.

Saw Martin Scorsese's "The departed" on TV the other day.

Full of top notch actors and a really exciting and riveting story.

A bit long but kept my interest until the end.

Lincoln - I am sure it is hugely significant to US citizens, but really a pretty drawn out, over-long and boring film in my opinion. Tommy Lee Jones is awful in the supporting role, but will probably win an Oscar. Daniel Day Lewis, as usual, gives a character acting masterclass.

Flight - very, very impressive film about a difficult subject. If you haven't seen it, it is not a film about a pilot. It is a film about alcoholism and addiction and the damage they do. The best film I have seen in a long time and Denzel Washington is superb.

Argo - deserves all of the accolades it is getting. Superb direction and pacing and very convincingly set 'in period'. All the performances are great, but Alan Arkin is a stand-out in my opinion.

  38. #488
Just watched Skyfall and although its not like any of the other Bond films, I think its a fantastic film, it has moved with the times by getting away from the gadgets and moving into the 21st century by using what we have today, the internet....... a very good film.

Saw Argo last week: good enough, but I guess the main reason it got the oscar is because Hollywood likes films about Hollywood.
Saw Seven Psycopaths last night, enjoyed it very much. From the same people as In Bruges and in a similar vein, but funnier.

Saw Argo back in Nov in the first week it was out and before it became annoyingly overly discussed and popular. I only chose/made the time to see two films at the cinema last year (the other was Skyfall). Guess I have good taste.

I enjoyed the film but really didn't think it would get so popular - considered it just another film really - and certainly didn't consider it would even be nominated, let alone win an Oscar. Not really Academy Award material/style imo.
Surprising but obviously great achievement that it did win, even if the British role was cast in the usual non-favourable and inaccurate light.

Well, French have more reasons to complain, France being really close to be considered a rogue state (amongst Iran, North Korea and several other ones) in the average Hollywood movie.
The audience tend to think we all resemble Christophe Lambert or Jean Reno. Pity.

Nevertheless, the only Englishman starring in Mad Men had a poor end. I did like its character, actually, not the least for its British accent. So you're right to complain, too.

To return to this thread's main topic, I watched "Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy" yesterday : I've been slightly disappointed by the plot. There isn't enough suspense and the various characters are too shallow (especially the case for Ciarán Hinds). The music is a pain, too.

Regarding Argo, I agree it's a nice film but it doesn't deserve an Oscar. Ben Affleck doesn't wear the right watch...

The Master - more than 2 hours of intellectual masturbation. The so very, very insightful music was possibly the most annoying part of this artsy-fartsy production.
