Thread: Anyone watched any good movies recently?

  1. #7051
Although daringly lacking superheroes, hobbits or guns to make its three hours fly by, I was engrossed by Drive My Car.

The Saab 900 Turbo has some great lines.

I watched a quite unique film today - - NINE DAYS. Wasn't sure if I would like its quirky subject and approach, but I became deeply engrossed in the story, the characters, and the acting. Don't take a punt on this one!

Watched Memory last night Liam Neeson not a bad watch, typical Neeson.

Saw the new top gun last night and it's basically the same film / trope as the first with the Star wars trench bit but really enjoyed it.
Flight scenes were excellent and over all a blast, would recommend.

Watched the new top gun this morning in an atmos cinema.
Loved every minute of it, very well done and I am a huge fan of the original.

The first few imputes had the hairs standing on my neck and an ear to ear grin. I want to go and watch it again already.

We do watch the original a few times a year still, so are pretty big fans - was concerned it was going to disappoint but it really was amazing.

And another vote for Maverick! Just a wonderful movie. Haven’t seen/heard a bad word said about it so far. Reminds me of what I have always loved about cinema!

The Good Liar on Netflix is well worth a watch.

Went to see Top Gun Maverick last night. Was surprised that the Mrs was happy to go. We both enjoyed it tremendously. Bit corny in parts but a great way of spending 2 hours being entertained without having to have your brain in gear.

And a glimpse of a classic 911 at the end that had me drooling.

Just home from the cinema and moth the Mrs and me thoroughly enjoyed Top Gun Maverick.

Some cheese for sure but that has to be expected after the first one....

Saw Top Gun Maverick at the IMAX today. Great film. A sequel done the right way that pays homage yet surpasses the original.

Finally got around to watching The Alpinist and just amazing to see what one young man could do in an environment that is beyond frightening to me.

Saw Top Gun - Maverick today. If you rate the 1986 original as 4 stars, the new one is at least 5 stars!

  17. #7067

    Red face

Yep - another vote for the new Top Gun (Maverick). I saw the original in the cinema when I was 19 and loved it despite the cheese and the fact that it wasn't a great script or great film. The sequel is excellent though - a little cheese but a lot of nostalgia, great action sequences and emotion too. :)

Top Gun/Maverick. Everything you want. Watches, a classic 911 in silver and some fast jets being thrashed. Just enjoy watching the carrier action but the flying sequences are outstanding.

I watched The Northman last night. It was very 'arty', violent, mystic, and dark. Pretty good, but not exactly light entertainment or family fare

    TOP GUN MAVERICK

Top Gun Maverick is the best film I’ve seen for years.

Knowing that most of the effects are practical rather than CGI made a huge difference but ultimately the script and the acting were far better than I anticipated, and there were a couple of lump-in-the-throat moments too.

But it was all about the flight scenes…… the training and the mission are really that good and Maverick’s rebellious streak is still there……

Plenty of callbacks to get original movie, but not overshadowing the new story.

An absolute blockbuster, barnstorming from start to finish.

It’ll take your breath away, AND take you into the Danger Zone…..

Not exactly new, but recently watched Nobody. Most enjoyable.

Not a film, but the latest season of Love Death and Robots, especially Jibaro, which is quite frankly the best and most beautiful animation I have ever seen. It’s really worth 20 minutes of your life.

Watched The Handmaiden the other day, award winning Korean film from the director of Oldboy, and it is interesting and quirky with lots of lesbian sex if anyone is interested in that sort of thing.

I re-watched the original blade runner last night (amazon prime)

That film still stands out after all this time.

Saw Downton Abbey yesterday and it was actually quite good, with a funny side-plot about silent film actors transitioning to the talkies and the problems those with rough accents faced. Good for scoring brownie points.

I think it was on this thread but Calm With Horses is a great film. Tense, well acted, great looking and a good soundtrack. You kind of know how it's going to pan out towards the end, but nothing wrong with that. Very good.

Saw that a few years ago and it's brilliant

Saw it last night. Pretty well agree with all above but story grts a little silly at the end. Doesn't detract from the action and flying though.

Yet another thumbs up for Top Gun: Maverick. Very enjoyable film even if it follows the story line of the last one a little closely (a bit like Star Wars: A new Hope and The Force Awakens).

However the opening scene had me expecting/hoping something like this to happen

Watched Maverick for the second time yesterday and was just as good.

Aside from some fat oaf next to me (showcase lux, so a bit of space). All I could hear was her podgy trotter going clumsily into the pic-n-mix bag every 2 seconds. Luckily her greed meant it only lasted about 30mins into the film.

At Elvis last night the cinema was virtually silent throughout- probably the 1st time I’ve experienced this

'Elvis' - great film. Not a typical biopic and really well acted, scripted, filmed and directed. Great music too of course.
