I found this on my sky planner recorded a few months ago. I managed to get the whole family sat down at the same time to finally watch it. I'm glad I did, it was an unexpected hit with terrific performances from Sam Rockwell and Steve Carrel.

It's basically Interstellar V.1 and even stars McConaughey

    Very good film!

Really enjoyed it. Great feel good movie with some fabulous scenic locations.
I see this film has divided opinion being in the "worst film" thread too but I saw it earlier in the week and would fully agree with Thorien. Good family film, fantastic locations and a good soundtrack to boot.

A Walk Among the Tombstones, another Liam Neesson action thriller, well worth watching.

Totally agree, not his usual 'action man' style film either.

We saw 'The Theory of Everything' last night. It was much better than I thought it would be (Mrs UK's choice last night).

I was just about to post the same thing, my OH dragged me to see it but was very impressed, if Eddie R doesn't win an Oscar for his performance I will be surprised and have to say the female lead was pretty superb in her portrayal of his wife too.

Not a bad film this, great cast, and humour thrown in too, making this a cool Britflick.
I'm glad you enjoyed it .... I remember seeing most of the actors when they were popular 15+ years ago ... and personally thought they all acted better back then.
There are much better British gangster films than this ... try Layer Cake for a start or RocknRolla.

Another vote for The Imitation Game which I saw the other night ....

AND saw Birdman a couple of nights ago ... pretty good .... I think it's aimed at movie types as it's got a pretty clear message about the current state of move making, and references to Michael Keaton (main star) as Batman and his film career since.

I watched Boyhood the other day and was really impressed by the scope of it; filmed over twelve years. Ambitious and so well written - I guess they has time to get the words right.
Also loved Guardians of the universe for a boys film and Paddington for the kids.

  17. #1967
I was going to put 'Her' on the list

ScFi Spike Jonze, what's not to like

Introduced a friend to Blues Brothers the other day. A lunatic film but utter classic. We had a strange DVD that appeared to be a longer cut than usual at 2hrs 22min, albeit not the full pre-shortening version - I had never seen some scenes before - including Elwood asking to leave his job at the spray can factory...

I've watched 71 and Unbroken recently. Both with Jack O Connell in the lead role.
Two excellent films in their own right, 71 about a young squaddie lost overnight in Belfast with both the IRA and the Army in pursuit and Unbroken , a true story about a US aircrew member who was captured and tortured by the Japanese in WW2.
Both films , in my view were brilliant. O Connell was very good and the storylines in both will keep you hooked.

Probably the best movie I saw last year was 'Calvary'. Very ambitious the way they portrayed Ireland's transition from a religious to a more sceptical, secular society using emblematic characters. Brendan Gleeson's priest was the only one which was portrayed as a genuinely believable character, the others seemed purely symbolic. Very powerful and cinematic.

Just watched The Grand Budapest Hotel

typical Wes Anderson and all the better for it.

Watched Chef tonight. It's an easy going, feelgood film - a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. If you enjoyed Sideways, you should enjoy this.

Movies: Mostly used by the "younger" generation these days it is an international colloquial term for what is known to the English as a "film".

From "moving picture". First there were stills[1] ("Still photography" is still used). Then there were movies. Then there were talkies.

Its use probably pre-dates the turn of the 19th/20th century. :)

[1]Although they weren't called "stills" until there was the appropriate contrast class.

    Best wishes,
    Bob

Hadn't thought about that, it is older than I first realised. (hence "trying to be funny" fitted).

I wonder where the term film came from and why it changed from movie? I mean technically they would have used film, and cinemas showed on reels of film. Perhaps that was why it was used. Always liked the term motion picture too.

I watched 'Moon' (2009) again last night. What a GREAT film! It's up there with Blade Runner and Solaris (2002) IMO.

It's funny. Under The Skin has got to be the most divisive of the "critic's choices" of 2014. I really didn't get it at all (and I normally like quirky sci-fi). I thought it was a complete load of bollocks with no redeeming features other than Scarlett in the buff - and even that wasn't enough to make it bearable.

American sniper, featuring Bradley Cooper, directed by Clint Eastwood. Based on the life of Chris Kyle, US SEAL team member. Excellent film and not too much Hollywood OTT .

Watched it last night, I'm not normally a Bradley Cooper fan, but I though he played it really well.

Maybe a bit behind with films of late but watched Captain Phillips last night. Very, very good and highly recommended.

Interesting story of piracy issues and a great cast!

My wife and I saw "Into The Woods" on Sunday. If you like Musical films and Sondheim, it's excellent. Meryl Streep is superb, she steals the film!
