Anyone watched any good movies recently?

Thought that there might be also a thread dedicated to good movies, as they seem to be rather rare nowadays.

I re-watched '12 angry men' (the original, 1957 version) and I'm amazed how good a movie can be when it's about an excellent script, impeccable acting and a complete lack of special effects :)

    Looking forward to your recommendations.

I am not sure I got Prometheus.

The gunk at the beginning... it looked to me like it was supposed to destroy the guy even at the genetic level, but the theme seemed to be that alien DNA was purposefully introduced?

    Films I have watched over the last few days... all awesome;

    • The Cabin in the Woods
    • Electra Glide In Blue
    • Outpost
    • Severance

Not so good was Iron Sky, but I am glad I watched it if only so I could agree with people who told by me just how abysmal it was...

These are not very new anymore but I liked a lot World's Fastest Indian with Anthony Hopkins. A feel good movie.

Another good movie was The Good Shepherd with Matt Damon and I don't even like him very much. Not much action in this but I think it's just a good movie to describe the (sometimes very routine) intelligence gathering and working at intelligence department or CIA in the old days during the cold war...

I watched The Shawshank Redemption for the first time the other night. I now understand why it's so raved about.

Zombieland. It was fantastic, like an American Shaun of the Dead.

    I watched Ted. Nice one.

Looper was great, thoroughly enjoyable popcorn fun!

But just don't think about it too hard after the film has ended - its only then that I started to realise all the plot holes! The pace is so frantic that you don't have time to think about them during the actual film...

Ted was brilliant. Infact, it was the funniest film I've seen this year.

If only getting promoted at work was like that

I just got around to watching "Miracle at St. Anna" the other day. Quite unusual for a war film - tried to show a different perspective. Bit preachy (as you would expect from Spike Lee) but went surprisingly quick for a 2.5hr+ film - so that has to be a good sign.

    Cabin in the woods
    Panic Room
    Safe House
    Daybreakers
    The Courier.

All good films and i get bored quick.

So far this Christmas we have watched 3D versions of Prometheus and Franenweenie, last night we looked at Deadfall which stars Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde, I would rate it as a 6 out of ten movie.

Wife and I watched Snow White & The Huntsman. Quite impressed. Good action and interesting re-telling of an old fairy story, quite 'Grimm'. Dwarves were excellent.

Taken is brilliant, taken 2 was good but preferred the first one. Definitely room for a third one after that ending..

    Another fan of "The Raid"

We watched an early Liam Neeson film this weekend "Crossing The Line" aka "The Big Man". Billy Connolly, Ian Bannen, Joanna Whaley-Kilmer, Pat Roach and an early role for Hugh Grant in a story of bare knuckle fighting in Northern Ireland and Scotland. A bit moody but good, with a score by Ennio Morricone and a short appearance by Julie Graham showing a bit more than usual.

Watched the 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' the other night. Seemed very similar in theme to some of Mankell's stories and I assume is typical of Scandinavian crime writing at the moment. Cinematography was good (but reminiscent of BBCs 'Wallander') and it was competently acted. But it had no third act. Perhaps the scriptwriter should read Goldman or re-watch 'North-by-North West' to see how to deal with explication in the third act in a brief but entertaining manner. It was OK but vaguely disappointing.

Went to see Jack Reacher yesterday. Not great but not bad at all. Cinema was almost empty though.

I am working my way through the James Bond Box set in order, just watched On Her Majestys Secret Service which introduces Lazenby and spoilt it for me but still next we have Diamonds are Forever where we get Connery back. So far Dr No has been the standout film but you just cant beat the retro Bond films and watching it evolve is a great journey through filmmaking

The Hobbit yesterday, boxing day (good film).

We bought a Zoo, Christmas eve (lovely family film).

    Jack Reacher, hopefully this weekend.

I watched the new Spiderman - quite enjoyed it - bit clumsy in a lot of parts but ok.
Watches Batman rises - again ok.
    Ted - I loved.
It's just a matter of time...

We have just watched The last house on the street, it stars Jennifer Lawrence. The wife jump around half a dozen times, but while it was fairly enjoyable it panned out to a predictable ending. 6 out of 10.

There doesn't seem to have been much good on tv this Christmas. I popped out to see Skyfall, which was ok. I have Christiane F: Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo to watch at some point on DVD, so should at least see something good.

Just watched Lincoln with Daniel Day Lewis.

Was really good if you like anything to do with Civil War, bit deep in parts but if you know the background it is good.

I would imagine it is worth a watch if you like that sort of thing. You should also watch "the raid"

Now The hobbit in high frame rate 3d .... thats pretty visually stunning

PI thought the Raid was overrated. Dredd was better.

Chronicle. A nice take on Superhero films. Outstanding. Also saw Ted, and though it was funny, not as hilarious as people had made out. Still, Mila Kunis though... :->

The wife got Magic Mike for Chrimbo, she insisted we watch it thinking she was going to love and I was going to hate it. (It's about male strippers) it turned out to be a retry good film good performances all round and directed by Steven Soderburgh.

I found this thread a bit late so apologies for going right back to the OP, I watched '12 angry men' as part of a training course recently, I agree that it was brilliantly scripted and acted and just shows what can be achieved without special effects, or any type of location.

I want to see Dredd, as I have heard good things about it. But it didn't do well in the US at all. So I am not sure why. Anyway. Saw the Spider-Man reboot, and liked it. Different enough from the recent one to be worth it.

Watched Skyfall last night - brilliant. I'm a Bond fan and thought it was up there with Casino Royale

Watched Killer Elite last week - don't bother, utter tosh

Also watched Bad Lietenant (original) last week (train journeys with work) - turned off half way through

Another vote for Life of Pi. Enjoyed the book and film equally, and the film helped me undersand aspects of the book I don't think I had quite grasped.
