Anyone watched any good movies recently?

Thought that there might be also a thread dedicated to good movies, as they seem to be rather rare nowadays.

I re-watched '12 angry men' (the original, 1957 version) and I'm amazed how good a movie can be when it's about an excellent script, impeccable acting and a complete lack of special effects :)

    Looking forward to your recommendations.

    - hmm I am sure I have seen loads - but they stand out as worth watching.
It's just a matter of time...

"Wrecked" with Adrien Brody was pretty good, only short but interesting story and well worth a watch.

Finally got around to watching "The Road" this week as well after sky +ing it a few weeks ago. Good film but depressing as hell. One of the better 'Post Apocalypse' movies I've seen, but perhaps the most realistic as well. :(

Watched Iron Sky at the weekend. Completely ridiculous, but some very funny moments, well worth a watch if you like your films slightly off the beaten track. It's main theme is Nazis living on the dark side of the moon where they escaped to in 1945. Fast forward to 2011 and they're coming back....

Just watched The Bedford incident (1965 cold war movie)quite tense and also pretty terrifying to think how close the world got to armageddon, just a few decades ago.

My wife and I saw "Two Days in New York" last weekend. One of my students said that it was a "RoCo". I didn't know what that meant. I was told it was a "romantic comedy". It may have lacked a bit on the romance side, but it surely was funny. Inventive as well. Hugely enjoyable.

    Best wishes,
    Bob

A rather unusual film I watched late one night which turned out to be utterly utterly brilliant -

    LITTLE RED FLOWERS

Seriously, an amazing film, seek it out :)

Yep...Kick-Ass is hilarious. Watch it even if you don't think you are a fan of comic-book comedies.

    Another +1 for The Raid

By far and away the best film of the year so far.

Looking forward to the new Batman though to see if it can knock it off my No, 1 spot.

I loved Kick-Ass- a bonkers performance from Nicolas Cage and a potty-mouth 11 year old:

Dave Lizewski: How do I get a hold of you?
Hit Girl: [sarcastically] You just contact the mayor's office. He has a special signal he shines in the sky; it's in the shape of a giant c##k.

The best film I've seen this year is Shame- not a date movie by any means, but you understand why Michael Fassbender is probably the best male actor in Hollywood right now- to such an extent that I still have trouble believing him in any other role. He's the only reason to see Prometheus too.

Once upon a time in Anatolia. Not an easy watch towards the end, and couldn't be further away from Hollywood in any sense, but an astonishing film.

I watched the original planet of the apes, with Charlton Heston and it was surprisingly good.

    Way ahead of its time.

Good call! I also watched that and its a tremendous film, strange, slow and quite beautiful. The opening 20 minutes or so is quite mesmerizing.

The Iron Lady is pretty good too, Streep's acting is sublime as usual.

Leftfield vote: Johnny English Reborn! Absolute farce, but very funny :D

Coriolanus - an excellent translation of the Shakespear play into modern day Rome, using chunks of the original dialogue.

Ralph Feinnes and Gerard Butler are clasically trained actors, and this is well done.

Very, very off-topic (!) - watched Prometheus today... The same as a lobotomy, but cheaper I suppose.

The King's Speech truly is a masterpiece :drunken:

Some excellent referrals here, I'm glad that the thread caught your interest.

Bit of trivia for you, Logue's son Valentine who features in the film, went on to become a neurosurgeon working at Great Ormond Street and Queen Square, and he trained 55 years earlier in the same medical school and same neurosurgery unit as me in London. Retired in 1977, died at 87 in 2001.

Watched this week-end all the 6 episodes of Luther. Good acting can only go that far with a rather lousy script.

    The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

I was pleasantly surprised, expecting it to be a 'chick flic' but the quality of the cast raised it above that. Perhaps it 'slowed up' a bit in the middle but nonethless I was very impressed.

Watched Kubrick's Paths of Glory not long ago. Probably one of the best anti war films I've seen, fantastic script, good acting and brilliant cinematography.

Interesting, I am currently reading, "the girl who played with fire" the second in the trilogy and have recorded the first film, "dragon tattoo" so am eager to watch this.

Re: Anyone watched any good movies recently?

As you might guess from my avatar I love "The Third Man" and as you might guess from my pseudonym I'm a big fan of "Brazil". I'd recommend them both and have watched them over and over again for many years.

There is a wonderful section in "The Third Man" where a cat leaves a flat and rubs itself against someones legs - still perhaps the mot beautiful combination of image and music ever (in my opinion of course), although the intercuts of Viennese faces caught in the headlights in Holly Martins madcap ride through the city, or the gorgeous long shot at the end of the film come close.

In "Brazil" there's the wonderful dollied tracking shot through the Ministry of Information as "Aquarela do Brasil" swells up or the wonderful soaring sequence that anyone who's ever dreamt of flying would recognise or the superb public information posters that pop up everywhere.

Please see both and if you've never seen either I'm incredibly jealous that you'll be seeing them for the first time ever...

We saw The Fairy (La fée) last night. French, physical comedy. My wife liked it a lot, and thought it "sweet". I thought it was insubstantial, frivolous, and amusing. (It was my pick.)

I've just watched 'Carnage', directed by Roman Polanski and starring Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet.

It's adapted from a play, and has a strong 'staged' feel to it, which may not be to everyone's taste, but the acting is absolutely superb, and it's very, very funny.

Well worth 90 minutes of your time.
