The original Watchmen graphic novel had a story running through it in instalments called Tales of the Black Freighter.
I think they made it as a seperate short film but now looks like they've added it into a new version of Watchmen blu ray ?
Great film, looks like I'll have to go out and get the new version now

Great films IMO but I'm a massive Refn fan. Presume you've seen 'Drive'?

Just watched the new Godzilla... wasn't hugely impressed. The effects were nice enough, but beyond that I couldn't see the point; I much prefer the Ishiro Honda ones from the 50s and 60s :)

I've just watched The Armstrong Lie recorded from a couple of weeks ago. I was aware of the story, but didn't really follow it that closely.

Blimey! Difficult to know what to think really. He's certainly got some admirable qualities, but even though I'm no expert, he certainly seems like a sociopath to me. The bare-faced lying and attacks against those who crossed him were frightening, and I'm not convinced he's really sorry either.

Saving Mr Banks. Tom Hanks elevates most films for me but the surprise was Emma Thompson, very well acted and I enjoyed the background story to the Mary Poppins film. Very funny in parts due to a very English perspective on Hollywood, the Australian twist makes it even better.

    Cool

Would recommend both ' Joe ' with Nicholas Cage and Calvary with Brendon Gleeson.

Red face 'Rover' starring Guy Pierce and Robert Pattinson...

...Australian film that's on limited release right now. Unusual. The thinking man's 'Mad Max'. Set entirely in the Australian outback and not a huge amount of dialogue.

Guy Pierce is excellent (as usual), but the most surprising thing about it is that Pattinson (of Twilight fame) can ACT!! :)

We watched Good Morning Vietnam last night, a great movie, and top performance from Robin Williams.

Just watched 'Don't Look Now' for the first time since becoming a parent. As a youngun I found it slow-going - what a difference a bit more life experience makes. Devastating in parts...

I watched A Late Quartet last night. A watchable but not a great film; don't get confused by the setting as it's not really about music. I'd say, of the principals, Seymour Hoffmann gave the best performance but then the characters were drawn rather thinly and Walken just ends up playing Walken. More of a ménage à-cinq than a film with any musical or cultural interest.

Hadn't seen a film in months.

Watched Prisoners last night and what a film it was. Had no idea what it was about beforehand and was fully expecting some escaped prisoner story...nothing like that at all.

Intense, disturbing and a true thriller. Multi-layered themes so think I could watch it again.

Beautiful cinematography. I really like Jake Gyllenhaal as an actor too.

Best film I've seen in a while. 4 out of 5 stars.

Watched American Hustle at last. Very enjoyable, no doubt helped by the stellar cast. Amy Adams is always superb, as is Christian Bale - irrespective of what you think of him, and obviously Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence are proving to be great actors. Possibly a little bit too Scorsese-esque for it's own good - but that's hardly a bad thing.

Watched Infamous the other night. Really enjoyed it.

It's the inside story of how Truman Capote wrote In Cold Blood and the relationship he forged with one of the killers whilst on death row.

Toby Jones was made for the part, specialising as he does in small weird people.

Sandra Bullock, Daniel Craig and Jeff Daniels amongst others made for stellar supporting cast.

    Well worth a watch.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Watched two French films tonight (prior to my jaunt over there on Monday)

Rust and Bone ('De rouille et d'os'). It's a bit of a slow burner but maintains enough interest throughout, Marion Cotillard made it for me. It ends on a slightly weak note, especially as 10 minutes before that it's well and truly gripping, but definitely worth a watch with the missus if you have Amazon Prime (also available on Netflix canada if you know how to connect to that).

Second up was 7 Days (Les 7 jours du talion). It's about a father of a 8 year old girl who is raped and murdered, the extremes of vengeance he exacts upon her killer, and the toll that it takes on him. I thought it deserved far more than the 6.5/10 it's received on IMDB, good film and not one I'll forget in a hurry.

Just seen and enjoyed The Prestige, a story about a pair of 19th century stage magicians vying with each other and will use any means necessary.

Very good cast too with Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johanssen.
    Cheers,

Martin Scorsese's love letter to the dawn of cinema, just a beautiful film.

I re-watched The Way of the Gun last night - a £2 charity store find on DVD.

The opening few minutes are as foul mouthed (be warned) & unexpected as I have seen...

...so not one for family viewing.

I'd managed to forget most of the important plot lines - so was happy to rediscover it last night.

    There are some classic lines.

I watched "How to train your dragon" with the kids this afternoon.

Absolutely brilliant. Far better than "Frozen", which I thought was ok, but no "Beauty & The Beast".

I'm going to watch HTTYG 2 next weekend I think.

I concur - I really liked it too (just for the kids, obviously ) - but the sequel isn't quite so good

    A Most Wanted Man.

    Gritty, subtle, dour, believable.

Alternately grey concrete, black Mercedes and brown autumn leaves.

Almost violence free, this wins on its atmosphere and on Hoffman's stunning antihero performance, and it needs no comic book cliches.

Yes, both female leads are weak, Rachael MacAdam particularly, but you won't care.

Edge of Tomorrow - although I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise the film is great and well worth a watch. Ive read the book (and yes Starship Troopers & Groundhog Day is a good way to sum it up!)

    Really?

I thought it was one of the worst films I have ever seen .The cast may of been excellent but the story was poor , didn't make sense and the ending pathetic.

Today I watched Ten Rillington Place. Excellent film and a great reminder of the talents of John Hurt and the late Richard Attenborough.
