    Military box identification please...

Found this little gem at a car boot today. The box has some mounting holes that, apparently was mounted on something. Is there an RFC or RAF connection? #
The label inside especially has suffered from rust corruption, but is a list of spare parts. I can make out 'case, spare parts, No 5B'. Also

    BRUSHES
    BULBS 6 VOLT
    AMMETER M.F. 350
    BRUSHES,DYNAMO OR MOTOR No 9

It has a strong brass hings, and it quite a heavy guage steel construction.
Any ideas of what it was mounted on, and what year it might be from?

Its an AA battery for scale only.

    Inside the lid.

Figures, I know its not worth 10p really, but I'd like to preserve it and use it as a more unusual watch box. Anyone know a way of preventing it rusting further but preserving it in a stable condition. No, I dont want to paint it with hammerite either...

For preservation try this in clear (or maybe google eastwood see what they do):

To prevent further corrosion, you really should sand the rust spots down to bare metal and re-paint, I believe the original color was "khaki-drab". Unfortunately, that means the original markings will be destroyed. If you feel the need to preserve them, make a stencil and reapply in black.
