I found the tale very interesting too.

Did they stamp the broadarrow everywhere, or only on the new parts?

I'm going to have dreams about an allegro with a big broadarrow embossed on the bonnet now

A quick web search (with meagre results, alas) indicates that the "pheon" (apparently that is the correct heraldic term for a broadarrow) was certainly in use as a sign of the royal household/royal property by 1330.

I would not be surprised if it has been used prior to that date. I'll keep me eyes open in the 12th century ...

    From Pimbley's Dictionary of Heraldry...

"Pheon - (fee'on) A bearing representing the head of a broad arrow or javelin, with long barbs which are engrailed on the inner edge.

The pheon was, like the modern mace, carried before royalty by a sergeant-at-arms. It became a royal mark, and is still used in Great Britain to denote crown property, being termed the Broad R, or broad arrow."

It is also known as the 'one legged chicken' and has been spotted in various obscure places where it really shouldn't have been. There is a tale of a trail of chicken prints entering the head shed (ie ops centre) at Bradbury Lines in Hereford (which is what became Stirling Lines later on), even entering the safe, which is some feat given the security there, even for badged members of 22 SAS. The chicken had laid an egg in the safe.
