No ideas then ?
It's my 40th on may 3rd and i want to buy myself something. Any ideas ??
Up to £3500 but £2500-3000 would be much better.
Sports style is preferred.
Between 40 and 44mm.
Not bothered about strap or bracelet.
Watch must be NEW !
Thanks for any help you can give.
No ideas then ?
Well if you're after a sports style (so ruling out the usual big birthday Dornblueth recommendation) how about waiting a few months and going for one of the new Tudors announced as Basel?
Save some money and buy an Omega SMP blue. £1500 new.
You have cast the net very wide...er...speedy pro?
What's in your collection to date?
Can't go far wrong with a Speedy Pro or a PO.
I agree that an Omega is a safe bet. Worth thinking about an IWC though. :D
If you relax the 'must be new' criteria you give yourself a huge choice; what's the big deal about new stuff?
Seriously, you could get 2 cracking vintage watches and still have plenty of change from your £3K.

Yep, I would probably bag the cheap triple 6 on SCOriginally Posted by walkerwek1958
You wont go wrong with an Omega Planet Ocean or SPeedy, or look at IWC offerings

I think only you can decide. You know your budget, you know what style you prefer. Now get on to Google and do some searching.Originally Posted by K80

Unless of course you know absolutely nothing about watches in which case I recommend a Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso. They are the ultimate 'Sporty' watch (well, in the 1930's they were). :)
It's what I'm celebrating my 40th with next year.
Mines may 8th and I am going for a Tudor black bay 8)
What do you already have in your watch collection?
Rather than look at the obvious Omega SMP,Planet Ocean or Speedy. What about IWC or the new TAG Carrera with inhouse movement
Or go for something special that will be worn on occasions. like a Rolex datejust or a nice Cartier.
Easy choices of SMP300 Omega or Submariner Rolex.
I bought a nice Omega SHOM 200m for mine - I was so close to buying a Rolex Submariner 14060M COSC - but the SHOM was designed in 1972 and therefore is more fitting as a birthday watch for me.
It's just a matter of time...
It's your birthday. Buy what you want.
I turned 40 this year and used that excuse to buy myself a PAM 176
You won't get a better excuse for spending silly money on a watch, if you need one (and I do)
So fill your boots
The idea I have is that people will either just post their favourite watch in that price range, or any number of safe-choice watches made by Omega that are easy to recommend and always available in your nearest shop. You specify virtually no limits on the watch style, function or design - other than it must be sporty, which means almost everything except a dress watch. Can you narrow it down a bit? Chrono, auto, date, dive watch, thick or thin, dial colour, case colour, functions, water resistance...?Originally Posted by K80

Omega Speedy.
Nice safe option.
As suggested, you won't go wrong with a Speedy - go for a nice vintage one maybe... :)
Speedy pro, you can't go wrong.
K80,
Surely you have seen a watch you really like and thought 'I'd love one of those'? assuming you look at watches of course.
Thanks for the advice everyone.
Speedy pro all the way 8)
If you are a big lad a PO Chrono (maybe not new - try watches.co.uk/watchfinder/watches of disctinction) or if you are on the average to smaller side a Speedy Pro will be the one. I've had three and will temporarily own another for sure. The are very classy and wear big.

Longines legend diver. A new one will mean it'll be with a date window. You'll have cash leftover to put towards your next watch for your 41st birthday!
Why don't you do yourself a favour and look for a birth year watch. Maybe a Speedy Pro. If you wait till 50 you might not be able to afford it.
You can buy a new watch anytime ...
Your 3500 price is very close to a Rolex Seadweller on sales corner at present. That's what I would buy.
I'm working to the same timescale for my 40th watch, but sadly not the same budget. Fortunately I already have a vintage Omega so I'm don't have a burning desire to buy another. However, the overwhelming use of the word "safe" in this thread when applied to various Omegas strikes a chord with me. Why not go for something a bit less ubiquitous like a Bremont or a Panerai? They're far more likely to be talking points IMHO.
I'd get a Rolex or Tudor from 1973. A bit more meaningful than some sterile new watch. But that's just me.
How about the Breitling range...you might even get a Navitimer for that money.
Unless there was a hefty discount on offer there's no way I would buy a new watch in that price bracket
I'd get something a bit special off sales corner - there's been a few mint £6k watches for £3k recently - its a no brainer IMO

Hi Beat Grand Seiko? That's 40mm.
My 40th has been and gone and I was going to treat myself but I was totally skint so didn't bother. haha...will treat myself later when I have the reddies.
"I bought myself a Rolex for my 40th" - Has a nice ring to it....
Although for me it will hopefully be "I bought myself and my wife Rolxes' for our 40th birthdays" :)
Hope that helps

Only 4 more years til I reach the big 4 0...... scary when i think about it.
I think it is only the quirk of the die-hard WIS that is so readily accepting of pre-owned pieces. Why do people question those who actually find value in buying things new? Sure you won't get as much of a deal as on second hand piece but there is an inimitable feeling of having something brand new, that is only yours, for big occaisions such as a Birthday of this magnitiude.
I have nothing against pre-owned watches but I'd rather take a new one anyday of the week despite the fact I'd have to pay more. As long as you are getting a good deal on the new one then even better. My only exception would be buying a roughed up pre-owned piece for the purpose of exposing it to a hard life. Why pay new prices for a model with no marks when you are going to wreck the wacth yourself anyway?
However if you want it in new or nearly new condition, I find pre-owned pieces can be a huge minefield of stress/problems because what one guy describes as 'excellent condition' is invariably not what I would describe as excellent condition. Plus, you have to be so sure on who/what you are dealing with. I can't fault someone for wanting to go to an AD, save themselves the headache and get the special feeling of having a perfect new fresh watch even if it costs a bit more.
But I'm digressing. For the money quoted I'm lump in with the obvious suggestion of a the 2500 Planet Ocean with D revision movment. A future classic make no mistake. Get one while you can.
I d say £3500 is a nice budget and i d go for either a 5513 ,1675 Gmt and you might even get a nice 1680 white if going cheaper i ve started to fall for the vintage Heuers and i ll be getting one of those as soon as i can find a nice one as i think they are the nuts .
I was a bit gutted to find after coming back after a week working away that a Heuer had been put up and had just sold :(
