Shipping Germany/EU to the UK - Options?

I have a quick question. I'm doing some research on the current options available to sent a watch from Germany to elsewhere in the EU and in particular to the UK. It has come to my attention that in the past year or so many of the options available through postal services and couriers have changed (talk to them and/or read the fine print), and that in most cases they will no longer provide insurance coverage for watches and jewellery, or they won't cover anything above a low nominal amount.

Now there must be plenty of watches going back and forth between places like Germany and the UK. Can anyone tell me what the current options are for sending watches with values of GBP 1,000 and higher, with full and reliable insurance coverage?

I am aware of specialist couriers who will handle this sort of thing, but we are talking about shipping costs (inc. of insurance) of about EUR 150+

Any info would be much appreciated.

I'd say you have 2 options (based on the situation in the Netherlands). One is normal mail which will cost EUR 20-30 and will be insurable to EUR 5.500. The other option is Fedex + Parcel Pro. This will not cost you EUR 150 but I assume something like half of that amount.

    I know Steinhart use DPD.
I don't know what the cost would be, but I assume that Steinhart insure their packages, and that it would be at a reasonable cost, as they do it all the time.

I've used DPD for shipping from Hungary to the UK with success, fully insurable as well.

I'd like to know a bit more about dpd as they are convenient for me, but I can't get straight answers from them :) what exactly do you describe the contents of the package as? what is the eu to eu insurance limited to? It says a few things on their website but as usual is obscure and the T&C are even more useless!

I know (from my own experience) that shipping a watch fully insured (watch of 1.500 Euro) will cost me something like 50 Euro's using DHL Netherlands. My own experience with DHL is excellent.

Thanks for all the replies here... its one of the things that makes TZ-UK a great place. Actually, there are a few suggestions which I've not considered so I'll follow them up. If anyone has any further advice... please... keep it coming. :)

    Deutsche Post it is!

Insured Registered letter,it just has to be in an envelope.

So send it registered plus adding 1,5€ for every 100€ insurance.
Insurance amount is not visible from the outside & you do get a tracking number.
    Max for watches is 500€!

    Hi Miro,
Thanks... yes, I've used this method before, but the problem is that the max. insurable value is only up to EUR 500.

Steinhart used FedEx to get my watch back for regulation: don't know the cost, but very impressive service.

The big problem here in Germany is that valora(watches & co.) can be only insured
to max. 500€ by most of the couriers, not sure about GLS!

Intex does it for sure.Try them.

I use this method when shipping watches to the UK and EU. It doesn't have to be in an envelope though, you can put it in a box, if the box isn't longer than 20cm or something like that.

Also, I used Galle Werttransport for shipping a EX II to Austria, insured to 5000 Euros it cost me 43 Euros and the watch was picked up at my house and delivered to the buyer next day. I spoke to Galle about delivering to the UK, they said they would consider it but the UK was a risk, apparently.
