I couldn't really name names as my knowledge is limited But I do know I don't like anything 'blingy' or too busy/overdone. Breitling seems to come to mind though!

This is interesting... a bit like teenagers discussing music...

It sometimes seems to be more about what you hate than what you love...

alot of christopher ward's stuff. alot of tags. alot of RLT's. those B and R square things. i used to hate breitlings but over exposure to these on the forum has innoculated me against that prejudice. i actually quite like the emergency now.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

With the exception of the PloProf I struggle to see anything nice in the Omega range and the 007 / first watch on the fake moon landing is tiresome.

I'm not a fan of gold watches on gold bracelets either, a gold dress watch on leather is a thing of beauty but a gold diver on gold bracelet is a thing of Arthur Daily.

I cannot stand any models that are the result of some marketing tie-in.

eg: Bentley & Breitling, Porsche & IWC, Panerai & Stallone, Omega and James Bond...

There are probably a lot more that I don't know about but know I would despise.

Not a fan of the APRO or the PP Nautilus, not a massive problem though as I can't afford either.

Not quite as stylish as this Omega!

All big companies make this type of thing.

It makes them a lot of money I should imagine.

Most of us here will ever have to worry about buying one I guess.

Brietling seem one of the worst offenders for both clutter and bling.

Anything lacking a proper movement that uses a battery, belongs in a cornflake packet.

This is an interesting point. I find myself feeling either active dislike for or complete indifference to almost every new watch currently made. There are probably half a dozen or so posh* modern watches I would hanker after, but I'm not really into new watches as aspirational objects of desire. It's the old stuff that moves me far more and the fettling opportunities that they provide.

If it didn't weigh 300g on a bracelet that would make a nice watch for the ladies, like.

I vote for the Speedmaster Pro. It has almost no appeal at all for me, not being an astronaut. Though I I could be persuaded to get one of the more modern ones (sapphire, auto, a bit of useful WR) as long as it was no bigger than 42mm.
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

    Re: Watches you don't like!

On reflection, there are few brands that I genuinely loathe - most have something I wouldn't be too embarrassed to wear. The problem is finding watches that I like so much that I'm prepared to dust off the wallet. Puts me in a very small minority on this forum, I know.

  28. #78

    Re: Watches you don't like!

Looks and taste is always a subjective thing so its difficult to convince people that an object or an item looks good/bad. Anyway I am a professional industrial designer, and I dare to say the following from my designer's point of view:

    Not in any particular order:

Bell & Ross - what a joke this brand is!! it's a pathetic and made-up brand coming from nowhere. Funny, many car designers lust over them. If you want a aviator's watch - go for IWC, Breitling or Revue Thommen or smth like this.

Rolex - it couldn't be more banal and common. A brand that makes more than half a million watches a years isn't exclusive for me. I respect the quality they have, but as desirability they're 0 in my list. Not to mention that every estate agent, accountant and banker has one. Don't be offended guys, I mean no disrespect! It's just like VW - good quality but that's where it ends. In terms of design they're proper kitch especially the Daytonas! But then again....what do I know about design?

Tag Heuer - also very common between my mates. Tag keeps pushing forward this marketing thing about racing hertiage and that sort of b*llsh*t. Way overpriced for the quality they have. There is a few models (the Monaco for example) that I wouldn't mind having in my collection, but the problem is .... I don't see myself spending money on them! I wouldn't mind them as a gift though :)

Panerai - another brand I would never spend money on. Appearance = zero

DeWitt, Mido, Ebel, Mauris Lacroix, Movado, Raymond Weil, Hamilton, Urwerk, TW Steel, U-Boat - who buys this stuff?

Hublot - proper celebrity bling-bling. The only people these watches suit are the r&b singers seen on the mtv.

Longines - I always wanted to own one, but the problem is they never managed to thrill me when put on my wrist.

Breitling are proper kitch & bling bling too. The only people I've seen wearing Breitlings and look good on them are the aircraft pilots. Usually the Navitimer.

All fashion branded watches - CK, Boss, Armani etc. etc.

These are brands that I don't like and I wouldn't have in my collection (I am sure I missed some). Surely some of them make great watches but to me it's more than just a re-sale value or a movement. Some people like Rolex for example, because of the high re-sale value. What that means is ....you're a trader, not a watch lover IMO. It's the image of the brand, design, quality & execution, perception etc that matter.

Other models I don't like are:
    Baume & Mercier Hamilton
    GP Golden Bridge
    Franck Muller Cintre
    Gevril Avenue
    Omega Constellation
    IWC - over sized ones
    Some Corum Models
Some Patek Models are sooooooo old-fashioned
    Cartier feMANish watches
and more but I can't be asked to complete the list ;)

sorry to the owners of the above mentioned models and brands :)

AP - old fashioned looking and not in a nice way.

Absolutely true and as I said, we all have our own different taste. However if I just say I don't like this and this and this, I will probably sound even more stupid. So I decided to explain what's my perspective.

As for the dressed prejudice. Aren't people with background of Arts & Design (and especially making a living as such) supposed to have an afinity and a keen eye towards the more beautiful things? When you need an advice on design & looks who would you trust, the one with professional eye or random person on the street?

Making watches is business after all and same rules apply to that business as well. Companies do what the general public desires, or, tells people what is good for them. They pay MILLIONS to people in marketing and sales just to fool the customer. What matters is the numbers, not what a handful of people thinks is right! Watchmaking is no exclusion to this rule, don't you agree?

I wouldn't go down the road and start this argument, there is no point of spamming the forum ;)

    with all respect ;)

Reg. the question if I like anything at all. Yes, plenty of amazing watches out there and some of them not necessarily expensive. But the topis is about what we dislike.

Beauty - eye of the beholder, isn't it?

Since art, even in all its traditional forms, covers such a massive range of tastes, you cannot say for sure whether one painting is objectively bad and another good. If a Turner aficionado decided that he hated Rothko or Klee, does that make them by definition "bad"? What if a modern art fanatic decided that Monet was crap? Doesn't mean it's bad art.

As a designer, you failed to provide an objective critique of the design of various watches, instead offering only your subjective taste as a professional opinion and at the same time offering several mild ad hominem attacks. Which is thus worth no more than the opinion of anyone else looking to stir things up a little. You could have, for example, explained why polished indices favoured by a lot of brands these days, far from being flashy for no reason, offer increased readability via reflection in bad light especially combined with lumed material which illuminates when they don't catch the light. All of which rather gives the lie to the WIS doctrine that applied metal indices are an unnecessary affection.
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

Ditto. Also agree with Howard's comment about marketing tie-ups, although he omitted to mention Tudor's Tiger chronos.

Oh, and I had a good laugh at the sweeping generalisations and prejudices demonstrated throughout this thread, as I normally do ;)

For some reason.. I don't like new Omegas really.

Apart from the Speedmaster Professional.. which is simply a continuation of an old ethic and piece.

Which doesn't make me anti-Omega. I have 2 vintage pieces and a Speedmaster 50th anniversary.

But the wave-dialled Omega, and even moreso.. the Planet Ocean.. just don't do it for me.

Interesting comments on 'Rolex people,' that actual assumed stereotype is easy to have before you become embedded into the 'watch forum' world. But once you appreciate the virtues of a nice Rolex, and realise that there are some good lads and lasses on here who appreciate them, it kind of equalises and neutralised the 'I need a Rollie' brigade, and rubs them from your mind.

But defo new Omegas.. not for me.. and not a Casio lover too. Well, not the G-Shocks.. I won't generalise the brand, there's actually a diver up on the bay of theirs at the moment that actually looks really nice.
