690mb?
I think mine was just over 100Mb....
Well after +2hrs I've finally managed to download this latest IPhone patch, only after I'd lucked onto a page that suggested a fix of going into the DHCP settings & then altering the DNS (haven't got a clue what these things actually configure  ) but all 690MB have finally downloaded & appear to work. Breathe & let go .....

It might depend on what version the OP was upgrading from - i.e. iOS 5 hadn't been installed.Originally Posted by a900ss

Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".
Never, ever try and update via your phone - takes forever, bit hit and miss.
Far better to do it via your 'puter
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
I updated mine over hotel wifi two thousand miles away from my computer — free, gratis and for nowt ... and no problems.
If the download was over the air via the phone, it must at leat have been 5.0 so I still don't understand why a 690mb download.
:?
Mr P,
I can confirm that I did Indeed update via Pc
Instructions enclosed if anybody else having problems!

"Reset Network Settings on iOS Device: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
Clear Hosts File: Look at your hosts file for anything blocking Apple’s servers and comment them out, this is mostly relevant to jailbreakers and if you see “Error 3194“
Change DNS Servers: Adjusting DNS on either the computer you are downloading from or iOS device if using OTA can resolve the issue, instructions on how to do so are below
Changing DNS seems to be the most reliable method, here is how to do so in iOS and OS X.
Changing DNS in iOS
Tap on Settings, tap on “Wi-Fi”, and tap on the blue arrow next to the router name
Under “DHCP” tab tap on “DNS” and replace with: “8.8.8.8? for Google DNS, or “208.67.222.222? for OpenDNS
Tap the Back button and attempt to use OTA again
Change DNS in OS X
Open System Preferences from the Apple menu
Click on “Network” and then click on ‘Advanced’ in the lower right corner
Click the “DNS” tab and then add a new DNS server by clicking the “+” icon, adding either “8.8.8.8? for Google DNS or “208.67.222.222? for OpenDNS
Drag the newly added DNS server to the top of the list, click “OK” then close out of System Preferences.
I updated an iPhone 4s from 5 to 5.1 and it was 803mb, did it via iTunes as I forgot about ota.
Hmmm that does seem a large file .... but we've updated 3 apple devices to the new o/s and all went smoothly ...
Did mine on the phone since it was possible to do over the air (ota) and works fineOriginally Posted by Chris_in_the_UK

No problems OTA on my 3gs.
F.T.F.A.
OTA (via wifi at home) worked fine on my and Mrs Cain's phones, and her iPad. I think the update was about 160Mb, or at least that's what the thing claimed.
OTA for iPhone 4s and 2 iPads using wifi with no problems (approx 160mb download). The previous update was via iTunes for the iPads and approx 800 mb.
So what's new then?

I'm normally pretty good with my TLAs but what does 'OTA' stand for, please?
Over The Air :)

Hmmm, that's what Google told me. But I thought that it must've been something else!
(Out of interest, when did 'wi-fi/3G' turn into OTA???)
