I think its whenever you at the login screen, you can choose to "hide your online status".
Log out and back in again and take off the tick that makes you not visible to others

Ah, I thought you were going to ask whether people on this forum get lit up while on line, or would like to do so. I was going to suggest that given some of the arguments I've seen, that being lit up online seems rather popular.
