    Opinions on this vintage Omega

Got my eye on this at the moment:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=p5197.c0.m619

To my untrained eye it seems pretty genuine but it looks in slightly too good condition to me and I have niggling doubts.

    Thoughts?

Does look in great condition and a very convincing ad. The seller has good feedback as well.

I'd be surprised if it's a fake, the movement and serial number check out. I'm sure there are people with more specialist knowledge that could confirm the movement though.

This was my thoughts as well.

I just wondered if it was a little too clean and maybe been over polished.

It was at £150 yesterday but it's shot up since and I question whether it's worth the money now.

The only thing that doesn't look correct on that is the case back, just don't recall seeing one styled like that, with the words "waterproof" written on it, I've had a google to see if I could find another with that case back, I can't, maybe someone on here has a similar watch, and can confirm.

Seems that could be ok looking at this thread here:

    http://forums.watchuseek.com/f20/adv...lle-56530.html

I've seen Seamasters for sale without the Seahorse on the back which always concerned me as well. I don't know what the story is with those.

Oh and I assume that gold plate means that it's a plated stainless case?

Not usually on a watch this old. It will be some sort of brass composite I think, with a 20 micron plating over the top.
When the gold plate wears (usually around the sharp edges and lugs) it is known as 'brassing' as you can see the dirty yellowish metal beneath.
I sold this '66 version yesterday with a piece of the gold cap missing, you can see the metal beneath isn't steel:

I see. So when they say "gold cap" that is what it is!

I'm amazed it stays in place so long.

Is there much legit stuff on Ebay? I would always be slightly worried I was getting sold a fake, How ever if it is real its a lovely looking watch, other that that cant realy comment.

I have the same model from the same period. Mine is genuine and outwardly at least it looks very similar to this one so it is most likely legit (I'm no authority on movements and model numbers however!).

And just out of interest, Austin Kaye in London sell this type of model for over £700! I watched a lot of these on eBay and they tend to go for between £300-£400.

It's OK but all the money already IMO.

They were originally named just Seamasters but had the DeVille bit added on later models as they were a bit thinner and dressier than most SM's of the time.

The front loaders are not that popular and added to a plated case....
    Cheers,
    Neil.

I've bought many vintage Omegas off eBay and this one looks legit and in nice condition. The word "Waterproof" was on many watch cases back then, until laws changed a few years later outlawing the word. Now everything is "Water Resistant" - well, almost everything.

Re: Opinions on this vintage Omega

The watch looks fine to me; personally I like this model, I`ve owned a couple and I`m actually on the lookout for a 9ct gold one.

My only concern is about the gold plating. I thought the gold/steel models were gold-capped, not plated. Perhaps the seller is wrong on this point but he quotes it as '20 micron' which would apply to plating.

The question I`d be asking is about the possibility of wear-through of the gold parts. Can`t tell from the photos, but it could be suffering around the lugs (usual place is the lug corners).

The dial looks good, which is quite usual for these, possibly because they keep the water out effectively.

This sort of thing tends to sell well on ebay and I suspect this will fetch a strong price. I`d be looking for reassurance re. the gold wearing through and I`d ask whether the dial showed any signs of spotting, ageing or tarnish (looks Ok in the photo, but better to pin the seller down and ask the question). I`d also ask for confirmation that it works OK!

This model often comes up for sale without the Seamaster logo. These are likely to have come from the States where they were sold in large quantities as presentation watches. Not surprisingly, they often have insciptions on the back, which knocks the value somewhat. However, I get suspicious when I see one with a plain back that's freshly refinished; that's often a sign that an inscription has been polished out, leaving the caseback v. thin.

    Hope this helps,

    Paul

If they are missing the seahorse does this mean that is not the original case back? Or, just some models/years did not have them?

Are older seamasters faked much or at all?

    Great advice thank you.

I suspect it is actually Gold capped and not plated. The Omega vintage site seems to indicate that it is based on the case number.

That also explains the lack of logo on the back of ones I've seen. They all seem to be in US.

I suppose I'm not so much worried about it being a fake but more concerned about it being a "franken-watch". So I'm looking for original features which this seems to have from all the comments.

Re: Opinions on this vintage Omega

    Is the crystal original?

"Hi Barry The crystal is the original Omega acrylic crystal with the Omega mark in the centre and is in excellent condition with 2 or 3 very faint tiny marks that you really need a magnifier to see. Hope this helps."

I think rather it's GENUINE but not original - not sure when they started using "the Omega mark in the centre" but fairly sure it wasn't the 1960's.

Also, it on the cheapest strap - Apollo. Horrid.

Re: Opinions on this vintage Omega

Just a quick update on this for anyone interested.

I didn't end up bidding on this and it went for far more than I was willing to pay. It's not a grail watch for me, I'm just looking for a nice vintage Omega dress watch to add to my small collection.

I'm not sure it was worth what it went for in the end!
