Uncle Loh The Professional Watch Repairer
Mr. Loh Chee Choy, now 71 years old, is a watch repairer for the last 44 years of his life.
He started from Market Street in the good old days, and is now a regular sight at the entrance/exit steps of Raffles Place MRT "Exit I".
At first I thought he was just any "typical" make-shift stall watch repairer, only to realise that he is very well equipped. He is really into the tools and had done a smooth job of replacing the battery of my aunt's Longines watch. Uncle Loh also boasted the investments he spent on the tools.
You see, I have my aunt's watch in my haversack while traveling between office and client premises during work, and had almost forgotten about replacing the watch's battery. It was during a rush from one client site to another when I saw him, which reminded me to take out the watch to request for servicing.
Throughout the process, he used some specialty tools to check the watch's condition, tested the circuitry, replaced the battery and a special mechanical hand-press to close the hatch. I didn't know such specialty tools were needed, or should be used.
I addressed him as "Uncle Loh", and he was chatty, positive in outlook and even displayed his fitness by performing a "horse-stance" to show me. At 71 years old, he insisted to continue his trade to keep his mind and body active, and to also avoid onset of dementia due to a senile life.
He didn't mind my impromptu interview of him and had his permission to write an article about him. He even thanked me for helping to advertise his service, albeit jokingly. His "shop" is typically open anytime from 11.00am+ and ends at 3.00pm, Monday to Fridays except Public Holidays.

I`ll bet he does a good trade replacing batteries and straps etc. Not sure I`d leave an expensive mechanical with him :)
