If it is a hire car, code of conduct dictates you stick to the motorway and at most 2nd gear.
You also need to find an abandoned car park and see just how much wheel spin you can get.
On Monday during the early afternoon I have to drive from Birmingham to Anglesey for business.
I'm using a rented Audi and am keen to give it a bit of a thrashing.
Now I reckon that using the M6 up to Knutsford then M56/A55 across will be fastest, however has anyone driven the whole way on the A5 via Shrewsbury?
Is the A5 a fun road (especially at that sort of time) or should I stick to the motorway?

Go via Milford Haven, ferry to Ireland, drive up to Belfast, ferry to Hollyhead.
The last thing we need up here is another idiot in an Audi
left hand side of the road
Just a couple of weeks ago, I did Wrexham to Holyhead on the A55, and then back through Llanberis, Capel Curig and Betws-y-Coed on the A5. There's no fun to be had on the A55. If you want to take a chance with the possibility of snow, take the A5, drive slowly, mind the sheep and enjoy the view (assuming the view is visible).
Quickest route by far is the A55 - A5 is a spectacular and historic route but can be frustrating if stuck behind a lorry. Snow is also forcast on high ground so driving conditions might be tricky on the A5. For my money I'd play stafe and stick to the coast road.
I drive this regularly..
M6/ M54 to shrewsbury then A5 all the way through. A5 is a cracking drive especially the 15miles or so either side of betws y coed. (stopping off at EVO triangle if you want)
If you fancy some entertaining detours, A470 over ffestiniog is good, all the way down to dolgellau too if memory serves correctly!
Have fun...

As has been said, A55 is easily quickest and has taken the main traffic away from the A5 which is a lovely route.
Used to drive to/from Anglesey from W.Yorks and Manchester a lot (grandparents lived there). My average journey time was more than halved by the A55.

For the most fun and interest, get off piste as soon as possible - I hope your Audi hire has four wheel drive :P

:) good point, maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that part - I'm looking forward to it as I haven't owned a car for the last 12 months!Originally Posted by chrisb
Thanks for the advice guys, as much as I would love to take the A5 it sounds like the weather may be the deciding factor.
Ill make sure I keep an eye out for the Welsh Constabulary too!

some nice driving to be had though, enjoy it and look out for snow :)
+1 for the A470
Seriously, in view ofthe weather, take the A55, you can always return via the A5 if the weather ameliorates.Originally Posted by funkstar
