Go for Hackett, pricy but top quality.
A few of the other guys have given the thumbs up to this maker. I've bought a few items from them including a nice raincoat, a linen jacket, and a few pairs of shorts. Might have to check out their polo shirts too next SummerOriginally Posted by sagachoo

I like the look of these might give a couple a try.Originally Posted by kultschar
in summer I sell the sunspel Riviera polo's in my shop, lovely but loose on the arms unless you're Arnie, I prefer mine with a welted cuff.
made from really nice fabric though and produced entirely in the UK, cant be bad.
They sell spectacularly well though, its amazing how when you tell a bloke something is worn by James Bond, they just lap it up.
i'm not obsessed with it but made in UK but it is certainly a strong consideration for me when buying clothes.Originally Posted by Ben Green
amazing how many of the expensive brands ship out the manufacture of t's etc to the far east but still charge a premium for them.
Hackett was great till it went football chavOriginally Posted by Ben Green

My god, if their current product is only half as good quality, then it must have been quite frankly amazing before, I retail a number of brands such as Paul Smith, Gant and Nicole Farhi amongst others,I also sell Hackett, the quality of the their polos is head and shoulders above all of the others, they are more expensive though.
When did you last have one? I wonder if they've improved since.
Also I think the 'football chav' thing is over now, they no longer put the St Georges cross on anything/everything so the hooligans don't like it any more.

To be honest my comments weren't aimed so much at their polo shirts; more at the rest of the product line and particularly their formal shirts, cords and moleskins which went downhill irredeemably. I remember Jeremy Hackett's first shop at the end of the King's Road in the late eighties (though I'm not early enough to recall when he started out selling secondhand bespoke). The chav thing is a much later addition.
In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.
Apologies for the thread revival...
I've just found a polo shirt in the bottom of a drawer that I bought in the Jim Thompson shop in Bangkok about 5 years ago. Absolutely superb quality and definitely worth a look if you're in that neck of the woods; they also have numerous outlets at the airport. A trip to his house, just off Siam Square, will also definitely be rewarding.

Boss green label and Galvin Green are some of the gear I play golf in, but in general I'm happy to wear anything the looks ok.
Rolex
It's actually very good quality - I should have tried to blag a few of them.
For day to day wear, with good durability I still like Ralph Lauren & Penguin. As others have said Sunspel are really nice for special occasions (the Riveria is mesh so great in hot weather, but prefer the fit of their std ones, which as a very soft fabric so look great) or for something a bit different I really like Robert Graham polos which have a degree of detailing on them that makes them quite out of the ordinary.
Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren or Tommy Hilfiger for me.
Although tempted to give Sunspel a go now...
Lacoste and RL. However i find the Lacoste keep there shape better as the RL's are generally quite baggy and are not fitted. Always notice the collars on RL's are always out of shape even after a good hot iron.
Probably as they are made for flabby Americans.
Boss Orange and Green labels
RL.Hilfiger & Joules
I FEEL LIKE I'M DIAGONALLY PARKED IN A PARALLEL UNIVERSE
I get the feeling my Cotton Traders shirts aren't cutting the mustard in this thread. Hardwearing, though the rage of colours can be a bit suspect.
Gant, Ralph Lauren, YSL in that order.
+1 for Jim Thompson, although being a tightwad, I tend to buy in their factory outlet shops.
Also thoroughly recommend a trip to his house.
Also in that part of the world the Penguin Munsingwear is a good buy.....you get a multicolored Penguin motif for your troubles!

fred perry all the way for me....in fact got a "west ham" home and away one for my birthday.....
I bought a Brooks Bros polo from Bicester for £30 its just as good as RL or Gant
RL golf fit are a good fit for me as they have a longer body.
There is only one and that is Lacoste, although This Is Not A Polo Shirt(yes really) are excellent fit wise and Sunspel's Rivera is a must for discreet but quality wear.
RL Classic Fit and a soft spot for H/Lloyd .
Mr Lauren must be worth a few bob on polo shirt sales alone!
J Lindeberg gear is quite good also.

Last 2 Sunspel Riverias I purchased were terrible.
The Material was hard and scratchy, the sticking was abysmal (large flappy bits sticking up on shoulder were they stitched it uneven) and the Navy was more like a dull grey.
Love my Bond Riviera, have polo shirt, however when I went to buy a new one I sent it back for full refund, nothing like it! I heard they now make them in Turkey so maybe they are skimping on quality they were once renowned for!
I think I will pay a visit to their shop next time in London so I can hand select a good one!
Lyle and Scott seem to be treating me well at the moment..... however, I only buy in their rather good online sales... >50% polos more often than not.
tried a few different ones over the years, but lacoste are my favourite, RL are good too
Sunspel Bond for me. Don't mind Penguin for a casual look, although a lot of them look naff so has to be plain.
RL Polo are a great fit for me.
Would like to try Sunspel and haven't had Lacoste since I was a kid but would like to try one of those as well.
Perfect for me would be RL Polo fit (but without quite so much 'back flap') and with no logo
never heard of Sunspel but just ordered a couple from their website as they have a sale on.
Brooks Brothers
John Smedley for Berk (Burlington Arcade) in sea island cotton
Lacoste without doubt having tried most of the big brands over the years.
Still playing golf in a 25 year old lacoste and the bugger is still in great condition and shape.

I have some older Ralph Lauren Chaps which are certainly better quality than the supposedly better new Ralph Lauren Polo shirts that I have.
Older Tommy Hilfiger shirts which had the blue and white gingham inner collar were very good too, and they retained their shape and colour brilliantly.
The 'Polo' branded RL shirts now seem to have so many different suppliers, that I have to try on every shirt before I buy it, as no two fit the same. There are a number of different cuts too (slim fit, custom fit, says nowt on t'label and golf) which all make fitting a lottery, even if everything else was equal.
Golf are massive with a medium just about fitting me and a large looking like a tent. The 'fit' shirts are a little smaller but a large fits just and the days nowt on t'label shirts fit comfortably.
I always have to try on whatever I buy from Ralph as everything fits different to the last item even if they are supposedly the same cut!
I'm quite fond of Rugby polo shirts myself, I find the cut to be really good and as they're made by Ralph Lauren quality is ok too.
I've got two Burberry's (not Burberry) polos from 13 years ago. Both worn a fair bit in that time. I wash them inside out so the collars have faded but the body retains excellent colour and shape.
They were £50+ each in 1999. I'm sure they have doubled in price by now and I bet the quality will have waned too.
Same for aquascutum. I'm still wearing an excellent quality purple polo from 1998. Collars have faded badly though.
Recently I treated myself to a Botega Venetta (spelling?) polo in the Harrods sale. Down to £50 from £250! It oozes quality. Superb!
Always been a fan of Sunspel, but as another poster has commented recent quality can be a bit iffy.
