    Yes - the Mexican Torta:
Fried, sliced Chorizo (must be good quality), refried beans, mashed avocados with lime juice, sliced tomatoes with chopped red chillies, lettuce and chipotle mayonnaise in a toasted ciabatta bun spread with the fat released from cooking the chorizo.

I favour the 'three nations' - French baguette, English cheddar and Spanish tomato.

Warm ciabatta, lightly drizzled with extra-virgin olive oil, then layered with thin slices of brie, lean bacon, and walnut halves.

Toasted thick granary bread, heinz salad cream spread on both sides, mashed avocado spread generously, again on both sides and sliced per-peri chicken.

Alternatively, thick white Hovis bread with peanut butter and sliced fresh banana!

I have a considerable liking for those when they are done well (haven't encountered a good one in the UK yet but I keep looking). A steak baguette with onions and bernaise sauce often hits the spot (generally the spot on the carpet where I've just cleaned the last lot off) but a good pulled pork sandwich with hickory barbecue sauce and an ice cold beer have also seen me through a few times of moral torpor.

Oh and salt beef with swiss cheese, gherkin and swedish mustard.

And dill and mustard herring on rye bread.

And a bacon, brie and grape baguette.

And a bacon and egg banjo with red sauce.

Excuse me for a moment - I seem to have become slightly peckish...

Hot salt beef, on light rye, one side horse radish, t'other english mustard, with a pickle on the side.

Failing that a sausage sandwich the only question is, Red Sauce, Brown Sauce or No Sauce at all.....

Agreed, I fell in love with them in New York, I have tried to replicate in my own kitchen but with no great success.

    Re: Best Sandwich....

This evening I'll be having chilli with salad and I'll ladle alternate layers into a tortilla wrap but I don't suppose that counts as a real sandwich. I enjoy smoked frankfurters (grilled, not boiled) and lots of fried onions with a bit of English mustard in a sandwich with good bread. When I was in Germany I used to buy "rolladen", thinly sliced beef which made ideal steak sandwiches but yet again, you needed fried onions.

Still remember my first philly cheese steak ( in Boston so it was a "sub") and have spent many a year trying to recreate it .No chance :D

The second used to be one of my favourite combinations - a whole banana in a suitable length of baguette spread with peanut butter.

A classic, Ham & Salad on thickly sliced bloomer. Everything must be fresh and the mustard must be English.

Possibly with a glass of cold beer.

    Re: Best Sandwich....

No no no no no no no no no no..... you've got it all wrong!

You take two slices of ultra fresh, long life, medium sliced white bread. Only the highly processed cheap stuff will do and it must be medium sliced. You get some fresh salted butter and let it come to room temperature (I favour Lurpak, but have not been dissapointed with Country Life). You spread an unnecessarily thick and even layer of now soft butter on one side of each slice of bread. If the butter is too cold, the bread will ruck and tear, and then I'm afraid you'll have to start again - There's simply no point in making this sandwich if you're not prepared to put the effort in to do it properly. You then take one multi-pack size packet of Walkers Salt & Vinegar crisps. You open the packet. You invert the packet above one buttered slice of bread at a height of 20cm. Crisps will fall out of the bag and embed themselves in the butter. You wait until the bag is empty. Any stray crisps should be recovered and placed back on the bread. You put the other slice of bread butter side down on top of the crisps. You press down with both hands on the bread with enough pressure to create a small diamond. The sandwich is now complete and should be between 25 and 40 microns thick.

    Photograph the sandwich.

    Eat the sandwich.

This is the perfect sandwich and anyone who says otherwise isn't doing it properly.

    ^^^

    Pretty, pretty good.

Only things I'd change are using a morning roll, and Worcestershire Sauce crisps - it's like a 1 minute steak sandwich :D

Crusty bloomer / toasted 1 side / Lurpak salted butter
    Birdseye fish fingers
Crispy Romaine lettuce / sprinkle of salt

In my younger years it would have been a BEST, bacon, egg, sausage and tomato on any extremley large breadcake.

I am rather partial to pan fried mini-fillet of North sea cod in golden bread crumbs, served in two slices of lightly toasted bread with a sweet tomato redux.

I also rather favour a freshly made Lasagne sandwich.

Here are a couple I eat on a regular basis

    1) Peanut Butter (Skippy) and banana with honey and crushed walnuts
2)Grilled chicken, bacon and avocado with a touch of hot sauce
3)Sliced boiled egg, tomato and spinach
