Not copper it is gold plated. Has a sort of rose tint. Commonally known as the Goldbird. Eddie had a few cases plated (25?) and you could choose the dial color/style. Here's mine.

Nice goldbird you've got there Ron. I saw Ming's black one and was totally taken by the quality.

I wonder if Eddie is envisioning a white dialled SBIII (as with the SBII) ? ... the white dialled XV is very sought-after.

I've been toying with the idea of a white (ivory) dial Italian.

White dials are going to be next summer's Big Thing ... seriously. I've seen two white Pannies recently ... and not in shops but on wrists.

Or how about a luminescent dial, like the DA 37?

Ooh, can't quite picture that. I'll have to find a photo of a black dialed one and reverse it in Paint.... :)

Would it still be sandwich construction? Maybe black borders to the cutouts on the top layer?

  11. #211
An ivory dial with dark lume exposed by the cutouts. That would turn some heads. ;)

(Actually, clear over brass, or silver might be interesting.)

    Best wishes,

Interesting Bob. I had been thinking about an ivory sandwich dial with a thin black border surrounding the cutouts. As you know, dark-coloured lume doesn't work all that well.

Sorry for some reason I read SB2 not SB1. The SB1 is on a Bros black Croc with one of Eddies old ZRC deployants. Very nice thick strap.

No! (sorry) The thing I like so much about the SB3 (assuming it goes ahead and I hope it does) is that it could be what the Mk XV was before IWC ruined it :(

Anti-mag with decent Mk XI/XII/XV hands, 37-38mm, 20mm lugs, sterile dial, no date or date @ 6 would be perfect 8)

How about a cool silver dial like the IWC Spitfire Mark XVI. I saw one in person and the dial was cool.

Also for a the black dial it would be cool to see hands like the Mark XVI, Sinn 656 or Damasko DA36

Looking at those I remebered that IWC do a mid-size Mk XVI at 34mm with the same caliber.

Potentially basis for a Ladybird 2?

My mother wears her Ladybird every day, on a braclet and lives a very active lifestle. It is battered, liberally scratched and was paint spattered the last time I saw it. But still has a perfect crystal and kept good time.

Personally I can't think of better place for one of those watches than on the wrist of a septuagenarian former BOAC Stewardess.

It took 8 months to sell the 50 Ladybirds Ron and as usual, now they're all gone, I could have sold quite a few more.

It's a go Todd but I will wait until I visit Fricker again to discuss the SB3 and the DN GMT at the same time. Too many details to get absolutely correct to do it by e-mail & phone.

I'm glad this one looks like a go, Eddie. I think it will be a real success given the buzz that the thread has produced (which has spilled over into discussion at WUS as well), and I for one will be eagerly awaiting this becoming a reality.

I'll admit, I'm looking forward to seeing the final spec. I believe there was some discussion about the possibility of the SB3 being a UTC or GMT watch - that would be fantastic! (But I'm not going to trawl through 16 pages to confirm my suspicions! :D )

GMT or not, this is going to be another winner, I'm sure. :)

One issue i haven't seen resolved on the Speedbird 3 is the strap. Before I received my Sirtoli Angelo I was was worried that I was spending a stupid amount on a strap.

Once it was on my wrist I realised just how stupid, because I wanted one for all of my watches.

IWC supplied the MK XV on that quality of strap and I notice that it's on straight springbars. Given Eddie's policy of upgrading original specs I wonder if this is an area for improvement?

I'm not suggesting it as standard but if Eddie could offer a curved springbar Aligator fitted to the case, i'm sure it would be the icing on the cake for many of us.
