Even though I own two spring drives I still liked watching the video. Thanks for posting.
I think that if ever I get around to buying a GS Spring Drive Diver I will waste a lot of time just looking it.
8) 8) i love that watch, is the bezel ceramic ? i,m guessing not .

Video is very nice. It does capture it well - in real life it's so smooth it is kind of eerie. It's just such a great watch, mine is still a keeper.
Does it make any sound? No ticking? Is it electronically driven?
I read about those, and saw some videos but there are unanswered questions :)
What's the big deal about a smooth seconds hand? Wall clocks have been doing this for years, and I don't recall people oohing and aahing over those.
Does it "step", or does it really have constant angular speed?Originally Posted by angeche
Super smooth and quite a sight to behold. Thanks for posting it
Cool...similar to this 45 year-old Accutron:

Is the GS spring drive diver the grail of all Seiko holics?
I am a Seikoholic (what ever that means) or rather a big fan of Seiko, but a Spring Drive watch is not something, I crave.
"Spring Drive - the answer to a question nobody asked!"
(I say that just to "wind" up John and Jose ...  )
Maybe, but it still looks bloody amazing. Just because it serves no practical purpose doesn't mean it's not wanted. Granted it might not be required but neither are alot of things of beauty.Originally Posted by WatchScout
It's just nice to have it.
Just to state for the record here, the spring drive makes no sound at all (the quiet revolution and all that :P ). I was an accutron lover long before I was a spring drive lover. People never used to get as excited about the accutrons and they nowdays do about the spring drives. I think one of the reasons is the sound. Once you hear an accutron ... then the movement of the secs hand gets associated with the sound.Originally Posted by pacifichrono
Somehow I feel the silent glide of the spring drive is more mesmerizing than the industrial sound of the 'trons.

It doesn't step, it is run by a flywheel rotating in a single direction which is regulated by self-powered electromagnets. Perfectly smooth.Originally Posted by walesi

But the point is that it is an automatic mechanical watch that has done away with the timekeeping achilles heel of the mechanical watch that is the traditional escapement, so its accuracy is greatly improved. The smooth sweep is a beautiful thing but it is not the main point of the movement design.
Or you could say that it is a quartz watch that has its energy stored in a spring rather than a battery or capacitor, but to simply label it a quartz movement really doesn't reflect the unusual and unique nature of its engineering. Its design really is ingenious.

that dial. spring drive or no spring drive, it is just wonderful
Agreed. It is a sight to behold.
Funny, that you should say that, John. It is exactly what I have done with my next watch purchase, which arrival is imminent :DOriginally Posted by abraxas
I went from the "ordinary" Seiko models (if one can call a MM300 for ordinary) to the next level by way of leapfrogging any Spring Drive Seiko.
More later when I have the watch in hand.
PS
You will hate it
Actually, it makes a lot of sense; to make a traditional looking watch a better timekeeper whilst still keeping the traditional good looks.Originally Posted by abraxas

Love this. Have to say that some of these high-end Seiko's really are unsung heros. I would compare them to Lexus vs Mercedes - just because Seiko's don't have the same pedigree as e.g. Rolex, it doesn't mean they're not made to the same (if not better) standards.

There I was thinking how it's over two years since I last bought a watch (DC56) and how I'm happy with my 5, and I go and open this thread, and now the devil on my shoulder is whispering "6, 6 , 6.." in my ear. A lovely machine that, I want one now! :D

Very cool. Which is the model on the original link? I've had a look on line and can see similar looking grand seiko watches, but not that one.

Like Spring Drive but IMHO the same look/tech can be had for much friendlier budget with recent Bulovas.

Do you mean the Precisionist? A fine quartz movement but completely different tech, and the second hand doesn't glide, it ticks very fast in the same way that mechanical sweep seconds do. But faster so it looks smoother.

I'm a Seiko covert now. And spring drive is the natural next step for me.
A spring drive ananta GMT. White face on bracelet.
