Date at 34mm is slightly smaller than Datejust (36mm) as far as I understand, hope this helps.
Hi all,
This one has been bugging me for a while, looking for one for my mrs, so what is the difference between these two please?
Cheers

Sorry also just remember Day is available on Oyster bracelet only and Dayjust you get a choice of either Oyster or Jubliee. I am deciding between a Dayjust and Explorer II so been doing a bit of research lately :| .
So there's nothing technically different in the movement then?
I will leave this one to those who know more about Rolex than me , but think what movement a watch has very much depends on which year it was made by Rolex?
For contemporary watches, no.Originally Posted by Mazza

As already stated size is the main difference, the DJ is 36mm the Date is two mm smaller. These days the Date is available in steel only, (with white gold bezel if preferred). Generally the DJ is available with more dial options, it is also available with the jubilee bracelet. The movements are the same in both. The Date is not so popular these days as many gents find that it is a little too small on the wrist, the DJ has a much wider appeal.
Isn't there a 32mm datejust as well?
Yes. A "mid" or "boys" size is available. They are quite popular with the ladies, and the asian market.Originally Posted by marin
Thanks for your help guys, as it is for a lady then seems like no issue going for Date instead of Datejust as 34mm is still a good size for her slender wrists!
The latest version of Datejust (Datejust II) is 41mm now which is much bigger than previous version of datejust and date.
the size suits a lady far more than a man IMO.Originally Posted by Mazza

I find it too small now.
TBH i dont think the difference between 34mm and 36mm is that noticeable.
Agreed. I probably wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't pointed out.Originally Posted by markyd3
I thought that the Date wasn't quickset whereas the Datejust was but I'm probably wrong.

Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".

30000 posts, will you be giving something away..... :?:
you'd be surprised when on the wrist... 2mm do make a difference :)Originally Posted by markyd3
My own (early '90s) Date is definitely quickset. I find the size perfect for my own wrist, as well.Originally Posted by swanbourne
Maybe this was the case when the Datejust was first introduced? It is not the case now.Originally Posted by swanbourne

I've tried for quite some time to find out the difference but it's still not clear to me. It might be a historical thing - when introduced around '45, the Datejust was the flagship model of Rolex and only available in gold - the two tone came a few years later. Before the stainless steel DJ became available Rolex made watches in the newer designs (no bubbleback) like the Tru-Date etc, stainless steel cases but all were 34mm. It might be the case that Rolex just continued producing them as there was demand for them.
The first Datejusts weren't quickset, the quickset was introduced on the 16000-series Datejust and 18000-series Day-Date (+16800, 16750, 16550). They did feature the instantaneous date jump though.Originally Posted by thenikjones
The Datejust 11 isn`t a replacement; both are still available. Although the standard Datejust is still listed at 36mm it's actually a bit bigger; due to the fatter lugs it wears a lot bigger than the older models and has enough wrist presence for most people. I`ve owned both and compared side by side.Originally Posted by bagel
Don't forget these watches are supposed to look classy and elegant; the Datejust 11 just doesn`t look right IMO.

then again, when introduced around '45 the DJ was quite a bulky & big watch. The same goes for the DD in the 50's/ 60's.. at the time those were rather large & thick in comparison to others.
Datejust certainly was available in both 34mm and 36mm (don't know if this currently applies). Date was always 34mm, as I understand it.
SHMBO wouldn't think of wearing a 36mm, and felt 34mm for perfect
I agree, the Date feels a lot smaller.Originally Posted by puffy
