Thread: Terra Nova - hit or miss

Terra Nova - hit or miss

A keenly awaited new sic fi series with hype surrounding it for most of the year.

In the year 2149 Earth has managed to screw up it's environment to the point where humanity is literally drawing it's last breath.

The discovery of a fracture in space/time allows a chosen few to travel back 85
Million years and have a go at saving the human race by having a fresh start.

..............and what could have been a promising new series is a complete miss.

The plot is thin enough to be transparent, acting is crap (Dr Shannon deserves as special mention), the special effects are 1960's B movie and all in all just dreadful.

Or have I missed the point?

Re: Terra Nova - hit or miss

Well, lets hope the US takes heed of what happened with the BBC's Outcasts, it was a huge flop because it just wasn't really doing what it could with the promise it had.

Terra Nova is a big budget TV show, it has a decent premise, but it does look like it could go down the wrong path easily, it's given a little bit of the story, so we have them back in a different timeline, they are building for the future, there's dinosaurs, there's dark secrets and a breakaway faction, so lets see how they merge that to keep it interesting. If they can avoid being bogged down with teenage angst/rebel storylines (as i note there's a few of them in the cast), and if they can avoid trying to be too clever, it should work, they just have to have a decent running plot, not get too daft and keep the drama/action up to speed.

Re: Terra Nova - hit or miss

If they can avoid becoming a CGI fest (turning the thing into a badly acted cartoon like Primeval) I think it might have some legs.
Agree about the Teen storyline shat - why spend millions on effects to turn it into a Beverly Hills 90210 style soap opera???

Lets see if they have any decent acting - a lot of these shows leave the effects and animation to do the work while the actors are like bits of wood!

    I watched this last night.
Absolute codswallop. It was like Little House on the Prairie with crap special effects and dinosaurs.
    Won't be watching again.

Re: Terra Nova - hit or miss

I watched both of the first two episodes. It was very slow, boring to be honest and I think it will definatly be a one series show. But I am prepared to watch the next few episodes to see if anything improves but not a great first impression. :(

I will persevere with it for a while, i found it mildly diverting but by nommeans a 'must watch'

Re: Terra Nova - hit or miss

Watched the first episode but not impressed. Similar thoughts to others about weak cgi, teen angst and thought the first 15 mins of the future was more interesting. Will watch the second episode as its on sky anytime and see if it improves

It doesn't! I actually thought the first double episode was bearable but episode 3 was worse.

Re: Terra Nova - hit or miss

I was going to watch the first two episodes over the weekend, the ratings on IMDB made it looked really promising. Not sure I'll bother reading the comments here as it sounds like lightweight childish pap. Thought the same about Falling Skies although I did enjoy it in parts.

Can anyone recommend any good new sci fi series that's out at the moment?

  15. #15

Re: Terra Nova - hit or miss

I'm going to give it one more episode though I suspect the characters, clunking exposition and overall predictability of it all will see it go off before I reach the end.

Re: Terra Nova - hit or miss

I watched a bit of it one episode and all the points above are valid (except the tents!) . There are so many things wrong with this its untrue e.g....

vehicles are not Dino proof and even little uns can rip bits off
why don't they have better guns? they are like pea shooters.
why would you stroll out of the camp unarmed? etc, etc, etc

    Shite on so many levels

Re: Terra Nova - hit or miss

Haven't seen it but the Primevil similarity is enough to put me off; that plus dinosaurs, which have been done to death. To make matters worse, I read that they will be inventing their own dinosaurs where required!

  18. #18

Re: Terra Nova - hit or miss

Ridiculous bit of scifi nonsense. Plot holes so big the dinosaurs could walk through them. And yet, supposedly the most expensive tv pilot episode of all time. Should have spent money on a writer instead...

Re: Terra Nova - hit or miss

The CGI was impressive, so that explains the cost, I suppose, but there is a limit to the adage that even moderate sci-fi is better than no sci-fi.

On the up side Fox are notorious at culling TV series so we can only live and hope :D

Well i've perservered till now...getting bored rapidly i'm afraid.

I think that it'll get removed from series link especially now The Walking Dead is back, and American Ghost Story starts soon.

Not over keen on The Walking Dead. I gave up on it 3/4 of the way through series 1.
Watched the first episode of Series 2 last night and there was far too much of Andrew Lincoln doing his teary eyed speeches in between the gore for me.
    I won't bother again.

American Horror Story is really good though.

I'd say hit. Not brilliant, but good. It has good potential.

The walking dead just started, definitivily going to watch that.

While where there, check out Falling Skies.

It's terrible. I gave it a good go but the last episode was so bad I couldn't watch it all and turned it off. I won't be watching it anymore.

I really can't believe how much the writer was paid for this tosh. Awful, just awful.

Yep...i thought Falling Skies was good but i did think the season one ending was a bit of a "quick.write something fast we;ve only got 10 minutes to get this together" feel about it.

Shelley Conn's pretty sexy, fortunately. The series is looking like a real let-down, though.

It's a sci-fi cowboy complete with mayor, sherrif and bad guys.

Re: Terra Nova - hit or miss

Cack, unfortunately. They're millions of years in the past but make nothing of the interesting elements of time travel, instead each episode deals with some nonsense like attacking birds, or a weird virus, which of course they can cure in 20 minutes. Major disappointment and lazy writing.

Oh, thanks - I was worried I'd missed the start!

Massively disappointed in the subject of this thread, though - it's really a kids series, but it promised so much more. Even The Fades is a better watch, and that's saying something
