Its the name of a Swiss manufacture that dominates the movement market. Lots of watches use them or copies, quite a few OEM base their own movements on ETA's.
Silly newbie question, but one that keeps me awake at night
An incoming watch (which apparently is coming by boat - taking forever) is built with an ETA 2824 movement. I did some reading online and nowhere can I find whether ETA is "E.T.A." or "Etta," Like Etta James. So which is it? Is ETA an acronym or a word?
Have heard it pronounced both ways at local dealers, so I am puzzled.
From what I read, ETA might also be construed as a synonym for Swatch
Thanks!

Google and Wiki not reached the Rockies yet? :D
ETA
ETA is an Abbreviation of Eterna Sa. Theodor Schild split up the watch and ebauche parts of the business and named the ebauche part ETA SA which was later acquired by Swatch.
and Eterna is now owned by PD (Porsche Design)
It's an acronym, but people pronounce it as a name.
Sort of like an acronym, but sort of like a contraction. (Sorry, my wife's an English professor.)

ETA - Elegance Technology Accuracy - LOL
not sure thats lazy, if you spend a lot of money designing and tooling for a watch and don't recover the costs then you will always be looking for another way to market it, a bit of a tidy up and using a better known marketing name would seem like a sensible route to take from a business point of view. They are a bit of a lazy company releasing the same watch twice
Car manufacturers do this all the time, using the same chassis, engines and maybe a few of the same panels but changing the badge.
Maybe the lazy route would have been to let it fade away as the Eterna.
