    One's automotive conveyance.

I'm not keen on driving. But, sometimes I can see the advantages of getting around by car. So, if I had my druthers, I think I would to leave the driving to the professionals, like in this picture. It would also be nice to have such a lovely car. What is it? Bentley?

    Best wishes,
    Bob

    It is indeed a Bentley

    Jun 5 2002

    Crewe Chronicle

A LUXURIOUS Bentley has been presented to the Queen as a Golden Jubilee gift from Crewe.

The luxury car, lovingly handcrafted at the Pym's Lane factory, becomes the first Bentley to join the Royal fleet of State cars.

Painted in traditional Royal claret and black, it was transported to Windsor Castle for the presentation on Wednesday morning.

Bentley Motors chairman and chief executive Franz-Josef Paefgen presented the car in recognition of the Golden Jubilee year.

It received its first Royal outing yesterday as it carried the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh from the National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral to the Guild Hall in London.

Complete with a plush lambswool and light grey hide interior, the car was described as priceless by Bentley car workers who had consulted the Queen on its design.

The Queen, who already owns seven Rolls-Royces and two Daimlers, was said to be delighted with the car.

A Bentley spokesman said: "This occasion marked an important milestone in the history of Bentley Motors and signals the continuation of the Crewe tradition of supplying fine bespoke and beautifully crafted cars for royal occasions."

Work on the car, which will be used extensively for the Queen's Golden Jubilee tour, began in the spring of 2000 after the proposals were originally put to Buckingham Palace officials.

It is the first ceremonial Royal vehicle to have been developed using computer-aided design techniques.

Bentley craftsmen built a Rolls-Royce Phantom to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Of course this may have nothing to do will any rivalry between Rolls-royce and Bentley aka BMW and VW :D.

There was a nice piece about this car in a recent issue of the "Flying Lady", the Rolls Royce Owners Club magazine here in the 'States.

When we were in Scotland a few weeks ago, the pleasantly fronted girl on Blue Peter went to chauffeur school, hosted by Bentley. One can't help but be reminded that BMW got the RR name, and VW got the actual company and heritage. I think this Bentley demonstrates where the heart of the company ended up.

I don't have a photo handy, but my wife now drives my Jaguar Vanden Plas, what would be a Daimler in the UK. It's black too, as was the XJ6 I had before that! Didn't set out to buy black cars, just seemed to happen that way.

My Brooklands has a "light pressure turbo", tamed down compared to a Turbo R and without an intercooler. On my routine commute I usually get around 13 to the US gallon, about 15.5 to a UK gallon.

Assuming that I drive the same number of miles in this over 4 years that I did in 4 years of VW TDi driving, my 8 year average should be around 30mpg

I actually saw one 'fall over' .. many years ago, it broke very hard to stop at some lights, swerved and ended up on it's side! One of the funniest things I ever saw!
