Air Control Lite, Pinball Deluxe & Glow Hockey, should all keep you amused for a couple of hours :D
Couple of decent chess and MahJong app's in the market plus if you like movies there is an imdb app' for Android.
If you are after apps other than games I can recommend the following (some cost a couple of quid some free):
1. Player pro - alternative music player which brings in all the album art
2. Mvideoplayer - alternative video player brings in the original film posters for browsing
3. Sky + - record sky from phone
4. Rail planner live - get all train times includes 'get me home' short cut and journey planner
5. Quickpic - alternative photo gallery manager
6. IMDB - Film trailers and movie database
7. Barcode and QR scanner - self explanatory
8. Sky News - watch the news on the go
9. Sky and BBC Sport - brings up to date sports news from both sites
10. Ebay
11. Paypal
12. Betfair / ladbrokes / Racing post / paddy power if you like to gamble
These are the ones I use most often, hope that helps!
I have the following installed (I'll try to list them from best to worst):
GO keyboard - a free "swipe keyboard" that I just love.
Advanced Task Killer - Kills running apps, speeding up the phone (for a while)
Runkeeper
Wordfeud - addictive scrabble game
Shazam - Great for identifying and remembering songs when driving
ClockSync - Atomic watch
Photobucket
Ebay
M.I.G - great trivia when travelling
Angry birds
Gem Miner: Dig Deeper - Kinda fun game
But I must say that the one I use the most is Google Maps - can't live without it.
Apps I use:
Touchdown: the very best Microsoft Exchange client for Android
Plume: Likewise for Twitter
Torch: turns your LED Flash into a torch (v.useful!)
Record It - like the Sky+ app but I got mine before Sky had figured out how to do an app for Android (so I paid for it). I've tried both and find Record It a little better.
Aldiko: Free book reader with links to Project Gutenberg and the like
Astro file manager: file manager program (duh!)
RealCalc: scientific calculator
Photobucket
Documents to Go
Quidco
Chess, Checkers and Reversi by Aart Bik (all very good)
Bluetooth file transfer
SMS Backup: Essential if you want to keep call logs and texts for ever - it sends them to your GMail account - and you can restore, etc.
Tripadvisor
IMDB
Tone Picker: allows full ringtone customisation
Ringdroid: allows editing of MP3s as ringtones
Tasker: fully programmable phone automation, e.g. when I put my phone in the charger overnight it turns to silent and displays the clock screen. If I connect my phone to the car charger it turns on Bluetooth, etc., etc,
Beautiful widgets: Nice buttons and clock/battery/weather widgets for your home screen. Worth it for the timed silence widget.
The ones in RED are my "essentials"
(I use my phone A LOT :D )
Cheers,
Breitling Air Race is now available for free! Great game, along with Tetrus, the only games I've bothered downloading.
Some I use on my HTC Desire :)
Tiny flashlight + LED - Great torch app.
Android Lost - Find your phone, lock it, Google Locate it. Do it via internet so its not using valuable phone memory.
K9 mail
SwiftKey X, great keyboard that almost knows what your going to type!
COL Reminder useful reminder app.
Rod
Dolphin Browser HD: Best browser I've used, you can set gestures for various tasks including bookmarked pages. So say I went to come on to TZ, I touch the gesture button then draw a 't' and it loads up the board index :D Loads of add ons too PDF reader, translate etc.
https://market.android.com/details?id=m ... rch_result
Cut the rope: Best game I've played on a handset.
Chrome to phone: install the app and an add-on in your PC browser (chrome or firefox) and you can send links, photos etc direct to your phone from your PC.
Tune in radio: 1000's of radio stations.
In addition to those mentioned above:
I know that there is a similar suggestion above but my vote would be for Lookout (https://www.mylookout.com/) which, in addition to the remote lock, turn on GPS and locate using Google maps has a feature which sounds the phone's alarm, further helping location (i.e. if you know you are close, or if you are a numpty like me and lose the phone in the house!!!)
Other favourites include Google My Tracks, which uses the GPS to map, time and collect stats for your run/cycle/walk etc. Oh and Google navigation is a must if you don't already have it loaded. Turn by turn navigation with voice instruction.
Swype is genius.
GStrings guitar tuner
Google sky map is cool
Kindle, if you have books anywhere else, you can download them to your mobile.
ebay app is a must
Droid 48 is an exact copy of a Hewlett Packard 48G graphing calculator which is RPN and has all the functions the physical calculator does.
Ewsy
If you ever want to watch videos, the standard player is useless and only plays one format. So MOBO Player and RockPlayer are very good.
I'm shocked no one has mentioned this yet

Google Music is the dogs danglies.
I have uploaded 5,000 songs to the cloud with my entire library available via streaming and my most listened to Albums and Playlists stored locally to avoid data use.
Agreed, lets hope it stays free!Originally Posted by Warr3n

I've just found a superb PDF scanner. CamScanner by IntSig Information. Free with adverts or £4 for licence.
Pocket Soccer - GREAT two players game, between football and air hockey
2 Player Reactor (or 4 playor reactor) - nice multiplayer game who requires reaction and fast thinking.
Xe currency - currency convertor
Paypal
MoonChaser - little game that kills time perfectly in the train
Alarm Klock - good alarm app
And also as said before :
Advanced Task Killer
Beautiful widgets
Ebay
Photobucket
RealCalc

A good app if you're into Formula 1 is the official F1 app for Android - F1App.
This gives you access to the live feed for each Grand Prix that is supplied to the TV stations.
Lots of good suggestions. I like:
My Data Manager - keeps track of your 3G usage
SMS Backup+ - Back up texts to gmail
Wifi Analyser - Look at the wifi around you so you can set yours to the best channel (I can now get wifi in downstairs toilet : )

mem map trakker

I have not seen many android apps that were of use to me. I am trading a HTC for an iphone next week so I will check out the app store
I find the Tesco grocery app really useful - takes the chore out of the weekly shop.
Got some new ones since my last post:Originally Posted by naggge

Pollushot - addictive game
Arcade by Kongregate - a sh*tload of games
3G watchdog and swiftkey. In fact, I can't do without swift key, I use to use swype, but swift key learns how you phrase your sentences, its text prediction is fantastic (honestly).
The first major app i would download would be task killer ! as some free app,s run in the background and will eat through your data limit
Not necessary on Android 2.2 or later, it does a better job of memory management than most task killers can.Originally Posted by Leg

tube chaser and tube traveller are good for the underground.
App locker is useful as well.
someone has already mentioned air control lite, but I also like Air attack hd and drag racing
Some of my faves:
FlightTrack and Flightradar24 Pro are very good.
Marine Weather Plus: UK is great for tide times and shipping forecasts
SoundHound
GoogleSky (a must!)
SanDisk Memory Zone (still in beta)

Just downloaded an app called Airdroid, which allows you to control your phone via a computer. Very quick and so far reliable too. Probably not useful to everyone, but I like it.
Swiftkey X is truly amazing. If you only buy one app that should be the one. Trying it is free for a month.
I also love these free ones ;
"TuneIn" radio
The google maps satnav app "Navigation"
The London Underground Free app
"Math Workout"
and if you use the train a lot the Cross Country "Train Tickets" app. Sounds dull but designed to breathtaking perfection by people who understand how you use a handheld device and have managed to eliminate all of the frustrations.
bollocks to all these apps
check out this app
remotedroid
turns your phone into a remote for your laptop
let me know what you think

My favourite app is Timeriffic. It turns different things on/off depending what time it is. For instance, at 10pm mine will automatically go on Silent and the screen brightness will lower to 20% to save battery power. You set these times and levels by yourself. At 6am, they'll return to normal.
If, for instance, you have a meeting at the same time every week, you can set your phone to go into Silent mode at that time.
It will also control things like bluetooth and wi-fi. And it's free :bom:

Thanks - that'll save me forgetting to turn off data when I go to bed and getting woken up by some stupid email arriving in the wee small hours.
The Amazon app is very good, especially with the barcode scanner.
My +1 really likes games from Kairosoft, Game Dev Story, Hot Springs Story & Pocket League Story(for me!)
Forgot to mention Juice Defender Extra. This has more than doubled my Desire battery. Best app I've paid for beside Swiftkey X.

Aldiko if you're into ebook reading supports all the popular formats and is pretty fast as well.
I use Tasker for this sort of thing (but it's not free) and MUCH more.Originally Posted by Neely8

Auto turn on bluetooth after leaving an area with a recognised wireless connection (as I'll probably be getting in the car): Oh yessss!
It's a really powerful tool and I would recommend it to anyone with a bot of programming nous.
Cheers,
Cheers for the Juice Defender recommendation Rod. I sometimes had to charge my Galaxy sII twice a day!Originally Posted by Rod
No problem  just the other day my installer (who has a Desire HD) was moaning that his phone needed charging by 1pm the same day. He uses it a lot for jobs he's working on. I mentioned Juice Defender so he put the free version on and set it to 'balanced'.Originally Posted by bigvic
He came to see me yesterday and couldn't thank me enough as his phone battery now lasts the whole day. So there's proof that Android doesn't manage memory very well without a suitable task killer.

Does Juice Defender work for tablets too?
