.......odd one this.
I popped into my local AD and enquired about having the glass changed on my Sub (decided I prefer it with the cyclops) and having a full service carried out on my WG Zenith Daytona.
The local AD said the sub would need a full service at £670 and the Daytona the same at £870
Just called St. James and the nice lady said a full service and new glass on the sub would be £430 and the full serivce on the WG Daytona was £530.
Bit of a massive difference on the Daytona!! Do you think she has misquoted me or would my AD charge a £350 mark up??
If it is "only" £530 then I'll definitely get the 11 year old daytona a tune up.
Call Kings Hill service and see what they say
The AD is either useless, or taking the p1ss

Some AD's are known to add around 50% to the standard Rolex Charge, which they also get a big discount on !! For some AD's read (crooks)
I'd be interested to hear if it is a chain or local dealer.
Thanks for the heads up, it is definatly worth checking!
Can some confirm if there's a MARKUP on Service cost that ADs charge over and above the St James Rolex cost?
It was a chain in my case, and they also quoted about 100% over the Rolex quoted price on a Tudor Bracelet.
I was told at the time its pretty well standard for many AD's to add 50% to Rolex (then at Bexley) quoted service
prices.
It was my local Cambridge AD's who quoted me £850ish for the Daytona service (can't remember exactly how much)
Although I'm not 100% sure if the £530 price quoted from St. James was the correct price. The girl seemed a little out of her depth
But I'm sure AD's do have a mark up on servicing.
In saying this, though, I recently bought a OEM bralelet for my 1675 and the local cambs AD were a tenner cheaper than the main london AD who I also called for a price, so I guess it's swings and roundabouts.
Still, £850 for a Daytona service when the watch would have only cost about £3k 11 years ago is mental!! :drunken:
Of course, whyever not!? :-)Originally Posted by mr noble
Pretty sure those prices quoted by St James are the current service charges, without any replacement parts, so you may find it's slightly higher, but still not up at the prices your AD quoted.
Local AD charges considerable mark-up for sending watches to RSC for service.
They just send the head only, the bracelet used to be spruced-up in store & reunited with the watch upon return,
these days any straps are polished by their own 'off site' watch restorer. :(
Hi all,
Anyone got the service dept' at St.James, tele number?
Need to get a few Sub 's serviced.
I will let you know all costs.
cheers,

I am surprised by that.
I've had a few manufacturer services in the last couple of years - Panerai, B&M and Breitling. The costs quoted by the ADs were exactly the same as the costs quoted to deal direct - with perhaps the exception of postage. My choices of direct or AD were simply based on the logistics.
I would expect the benefit to the AD of handling the service was a reduced cost to them - ie their mark up is already costed.

It's a big hit in one go, granted.Originally Posted by mr noble
But if you break it down, it's only £1.49 a week over 11 years, to keep such a precision machine running it doesn't seem that much, say compared to the weekly cost of commuting either by public or private transport over the same length of time.
And I know what I'd rather spend my hard earned on
Why would anyone take a watch to an AD only for it to be sent on to Rolex when Rolex happily deal with the public direct?
There is bound to be a mark up and more shipping and hence more risk.
Convenience and the AD covers insurance for posted watches.Originally Posted by london lad

Can you drop the watch off at St. James?
If so then for people who live in London it would make sense to cut out the money grabbing AD 8)
At those mark ups it would make sense for anyone who didn't live in London too!
Not only can you drop it off but you can talk to a technician and explain exactly what you want done and have it returned by insured shipping FOC.
OK, I'll play. My mid 80s 5513 with "coveted" crackle/spiderweb dial is in Bexley at the moment. Sent it off as a once in a lifetime spruce up, normally use Martins in Glasgow who're an excellent non-AD specialist. A "vintage" service runs to £650, same again for a replacement dial "not optional sir, lacquer could flake off and get into the movement". So £1300. Then they quote £1250 for a new 93150, taking the total cost to £2550. Insane. Skipped the 93150 as my old one, albeit stretched to b*****y, is ultra comfy. But £1300 on a watch worth £2500-£3000 ish is even more nuts. Fortunately planets orbit the sun in faster timescales than Bexley take to do a service so has given me time to save up.... :shock:Originally Posted by mr noble
Bet you will love it though when it comes backOriginally Posted by MattMM
I think though, if you have a watch you love, the value of the watch doesn't come into it as it isn't a investement but a cherished 'thing'.
Indeed, £1300 doesn't come into it when its the watch I was wearing when both my kids were born, and my son'll inherit one day. Don't even try to rationalise WIS-dom... :D
I hope you get your original dial back too :shock:A "vintage" service runs to £650, same again for a replacement dial "not optional sir, lacquer could flake off and get into the movement"
£650 for a service replacement dial - that really is taking the mick. I like Rolex, but I don't like where they've gone in this respect (pricing for vintage servicing etc)
Cheers

I'll hopefully be going down to RSC St James on Monday to hand in my OQ for a service. My two local ADs said sixteen weeks turnaround while St James said ten weeks saying they used to be around eighteen weeks but have cut it down to just ten. Makes sense to go direct.
Go direct to Rolex service, for the inconvenience of posting youyr watch to them, you will save a fortune...
