Make sure not to pick anything too heavy or sharp. They don't half hurt when thrown back at you!
PS: Congrats matey
Bea has finally convinced me that I should consider myself lucky having a Latina bird some 18 years younger than me, and bearing in mind that she's been asking me to marry her for months it's probably about time I responded in kind :P
I'd like to source a vintage ring, nothing too fancy or wildly expensive, and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction in terms of a reputable (vintage) dealer (as opposed to "Hatton Garden").
Ta :)

I had a similar task with the mrs' engagement ring, some years ago, we were searching all sorts of avenues at the time and then happened upon a nice one on ebay of all places, I bid the obligatory 1 months wages and duly won it for £32 :D
heh she picked it, what a winner :D
Nice one Tony – you’ve decided to go for it – this is certainly a full and positive week for you – starting last Monday evening :)
How about getting something made. Perhaps source the stone(s) and then get something designed/made. I guess it depends to an extent on how much time - you could do the deed (i.e. engagement) and then make the ring event something to do together - even a trip to Antwerp (as long as you've worked out the cost of the stones and know what you should be paying) - to source the stones.
Years ago I did evening classes in silversmithing/jewellery making (yep, really - just me and 13 women :) ) - and this lady was the tutor - lovely girl, a lifelong jeweller http://www.nicolalouise.co.uk - would be happy to make an intro, if this was of any interest. She has good connections in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter and would be able to source whatever you wanted in terms of materials - at a decent price. She'll do the design, and you'll get a hand made piece. She did something for my other half a few years back - which went down very well - my design, her graft. Perhaps if you find an antique ring/bracelet etc, with the stones you want, then you can present the stones and she can simply make what you want with them - I don't know how VAT works on diamonds i.e. whether in old jewellery they are cheaper.
Equally you have that contact in South Wales IIRC.
Re antique - I'm no expert, but these guys are local to me and both have been there many many years - I suspect that if you gave them a brief, they could come back with some candidates:
http://www.howardsjewellers.com/ - these guys have some very very nice stones.

Hi Tony,
and congrats. If you google "antique Roman gold ring", you'll be surprised how (relatively) unexpensive can REALLY vintage - ie. Roman Empire or older!- rings be. It's a very "odd" choice, though, and might not please everybody, due to the sometimes heavy patina these artefacts show.
What a super idea. As you say, the style/concept might not appeal to everyone, but a great idea.Originally Posted by tomthumbring

If you can get to Basildon you might consider visiting Mallards http://www.mallardjewellers.co.uk/Malla ... ILDON.html ... they are reputable jewellers/pawnbrokers and usually have a good selection of vintage diamond rings .. and have several other branches in the SE and East Midlands. I have bought secondhand watches from them so you might see a watch worth buying too ... and their Rolex watches are guaranteed to be genuine ie no aftermarket parts. At the moment they have a sale on so might be some reductions on secondhand diamond rings and watches. They just reduced a secondhand gents 18K gold JLC dress watch by £1000 in Peterborough ... this model http://www.jewelsintime.cc/Products/Wat ... e-Oval.asp

"Well they would say that ... wouldn't they!"
I dont know if its much help, but if you can find the one that you like I have a good friend that is a jewellery maker, he made my mrs a garnet and diamond ring last year, we found one in a well known jewellers and he made it for us at less than half the price.
he sourced everything and worked from a photo I got at the jewellers :D
worth considering, however I am in derbyshire so it maybe a bit of a trek
James :)
Nice One :thumbright:
Congratulations and good idea with the vintage ring.
Much better value than the prices they tuck you up with in shops.
One months wages indeed!
In the grand scheme of things a ring is the last thing to worry about.
Cheers,
Neil.
I can get you a nice one......if you are interested let me know, and I will start an argument this afternoon! :D
No seriously congrats,I hope you are very happy.

Very nice indeed. How can she resist
Best of luck!
Beautiful ring!
It will be the best thing you ever do-I was married about 4 1/2 years ago to a wonderful woman, and we're 3 weeks away from our first child.
They've been the best years of my life so far.
dont want to piss on your chips tone as youre probably all slathered in blue stratos in anticipation of the big night, but the mr pragmatic on my right shoulder wants to know if youve thought of a pre nup?
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
That is very very nice ring, and great snaps, diamonds are notoriously difficult to shoot.

A Beaut :D - I hope she says "yes"
broaching the subject may be as about as romantic as coming across a turd in the jacuzzi but better to tackle it now if at all rather than too late.... :? may sound harsh tone but no matter how rosy things may seem at the time theres plenty been left in the lurch a few years down the road...Originally Posted by learningtofly

Don't marry her marry me!

Fantastic ring!! Best wishes for a lifetime of shagging by the bee, by the baa, by the chandelier, by the ... (be imaginative)!
Just stumbled across this thread.
Massive congratulations mate. Hope she says yes although I doubt any woman could refuse such a beautiful ring (as well as your good self obviously )
Please let us all know the outcome once you've managed to get up off your knees

Gary

That's a beautiful ring, good luck with the proposal! How can she say no..
I take it that's a platinum setting.. I too went for a trilogy when I finally got around to proposing, although I played safe and went with round brilliant stones. I still think I did a good job, though, and so (fortunately) does my lovely wife! Second anniversary coming up next month.. time flies. :)
Cheers,
Plug
Nice ring, i would imagine that you will be getting plenty of booty action later this evening.
I can't believe you're telling us all on the forum before you ask her! You really are a lost cause (to us, that is). Hope it's all going well...
"A man of little significance"
Lovely ring & good luck mate!
Good luck with the proposal Tony!
