Vintage CWC Chronograph Val. 7733 - tell me about them

I've recently started to 'stray' from looking for Heuers  , and really like the look of these 1970's CWC's.
What's the 'going rate' for one in half decent condition. I love patina & wabi on these, so not really after a mint one.
I've seen a rather 'battered' one for around £600 that needs a relume & other minor cosmetic work. Is this good?

Is there anything I should watch out for?

This is the type of model I'm referring to - does it have an actual model number I can use to research online?

Image nicked from a fellow TZer from an old thread..

    Thanks

I had one of those (the re-issue in the photograph), very nice, one of the most accurate mechanical watches I ever owned. Only thing I didn't like was that it was a bit on the heavy side.

Here is some information about the original

That is my photo and I still have the watch. It is the reissue and I have nothing but praise for it. I agree that the accuracy is very good and the power reserve is too. CWC had a lot of work put in to the 7760 movement - modifying it for the bicompax layout and upping the jewel count to 29 - which might explain it. It also explains the £799 price Silverman's charge for them!

Good original ones (issued from 1972 onwards I think) will cost a lot more though.

There were actually four manufacturers (or perhaps sellers to the MOD) of this model, so if you want to widen your search you can also look for Hamilton, Newmark and Precista - they are all essentially the same watch.

    Here's my Hamilton

I'd say the 7760 in the CWC to be similar to the 7760 bi-compax in the Hanhart chronos minus the decorations.

Thanks. I've seen some vintage issued ones advertised as having a Val. 7733.. what's the story there - is it just a mistake?

The vintage ones were Valjoux 7733; the current ones have the 7760 movement. The OP title is misleading, I think.

Thanks, I am watching that. Not being funny, but it's not 'a bargain' until the bidding ends. I never quite understand why people say that. It could go for £1000 or £200 who knows. I did miss out on a lovely example yesterday. Went for £700 in the end with a full service from our own Rich (Watch Spot)

Just out of interest, (I'm not interested in buying it) there is one an the 'bay at the moment, but the markings on the caseback look engraved, as opposed to stamped.. so is this incorrect?

hmmm... yes i understand but i would have expected the price with 2 days to go to be well over £500. When i was looking the price was more like £1200 for a good, serviced watch from a dealer [or watch fair].... so £700 and £1000 seem cheap[er]... dunno been out of the loop on current prices for while...

Re: Vintage CWC Chronograph Val. 7733 - tell me about them

I'm no expert in these, but a beautiful 1978 (I think) example, serviced by Rich Askham sold for a tad over £700 yesterday. Chronomaster sold a rather wabi'd one over the weekend for £600.

I know what you mean about it maybe should be 'higher' by now, but it's an auction after all, I've sat & watched Heuers go up £2k in the last 60 seconds.

I'm no expert (maybe Terry Andrews will pop in sometime) but I think the caseback is wrong. Newmark got the 1980 contract, not CWC; the notches in the caseback look short compared to my 1974 CWC, and my caseback is not marked CWC on the inside (although I realise this may change year to year). The engraving is almost identical to my Newmark; my CWC is stamped.

As for prices, I keep a spreadsheet (how sad!) of things I'm interested in. The average price on eBay (last 2-3 years) for a CWC is £697, with a spread of £480 to £1010. Tha Hamilton goes for a little more, the Precista around 850 and the rare Newmark over 1000. I've seen CWC's on commercial websites for 1600 and more!

    Thanks Rabbit.

I'm so glad I found the CWC Chronograph. It reminds me of a Heuer Bund (Hands), and I think it's just a cool design, nice size.. perfect really.

I'm going to enjoy hunting one down. Will make a perfect 'do anything' watch.

Can't comment on this caseback, Terry will know. But the subdials do not intersect arabics 2,4,8,10.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Original-1980 ... 336983f4b7

And neither do they on this one either.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT

I have seen a few like this but the majority have subdials that intersect 2,4,8,10.
Possibly a redial, mod perhaps. Any thoughts or theories ? Bob.

My 1975 Royal Navy issue Hamilton Chronograph ... to relume or not relume? Any guestimates ref relume £cost and are seals available? When my watchmaker adjusted the movement he said the 'seals are gone' - so I have never worn it - it is wound once monthly. And I'm not sure exactly which seals he was referring to but assume might have been the pushers?

    Best wishes

Can I ask how many of each manufacturer you have seen on ebay in the last 2 - 3 years ?

OK, eBay UK only, and I might have missed one or two:

    CWC: 24
    Hamilton: 5
    Precista: 3
    Newmark: 2

Re: Vintage CWC Chronograph Val. 7733 - tell me about them

Anchor Supplies have them occasionally http://www.anchorsupplies.com/wrist.htm and still show the pics of both CWC and Hamilton ... Although they state 'OUT OF STOCK' , if you click on the CWC pic. it then states ' only one in stock' ... and note the £595 price. I rang them two years ago to ask if they had a Hamilton even though the web advert said 'OUT OF STOCK'. After chatting they found one but said ,"... the hands' lume is missing ... " ... we then negotiated a better price and I bought it. So might be worth asking if they have any in stock now?

Nearly the same as mine, but my hour numbers are disturbed by the subdials at 2, 4, 8, 10.and mine (as yours) has the "hooked 7"...So lots of variants about!

Here´s an early Precista I managed to get, thanks to bobc...

    and here´s the Hamilton 0552/924-336-1392/72

    and here´s the CWC

Now if anyone would care to sell me a Newmark and Breitling, then I´d have them all! :D

Re: Vintage CWC Chronograph Val. 7733 - tell me about them

The reason that the arabics at 2,4,8 and 10 do not intersect the subdials on the Precista is because the numbers are positioned slightly higher in relation to the markers on 2 & 10 and lower on 4 & 8. So by doing this Precista has produced a much 'cleaner' looking dial. surprising really that the others didnt do this as its so simple. Anyway heres mine.

Re: Vintage CWC Chronograph Val. 7733 - tell me about them

pretty sure everyone has seen these, but in case it helps for referencing, here are my 4 7733 s.

pretty sure the Hamilton and CWC are gilt, also Precista 2, 4, 8 and 10 not intersected, i think there are other differences too, casebacks etc.
