    High end Rolex valuation please.

    Hi everyone,

A friend of mines father has come to the conclusion that he can no longer afford to keep hold of his 18k Rolex. Neither me or him have come across anything of such high value before. It comes in its original box with papers. It was bought by him in WOS in Liverpool before it closed :). It has not been serviced since 1982 (which was its purchase date).

What we would like to know is:

How does he get the best price for it?
Should we send it in the post to get it valued?
Should it be sent in the post to get serviced?
    Whats it worth?

Here are some photos (taken with the iphone)

    Regards...

Where is your friend/the watch located? Taking it to a decent jewellers/watch shop for a look would be a good place to start. Based on recently sold prices from bricks and mortar places, 18ct yellow day-dates have been sold by them for anywhere between 5k and 9k. Obviously that's retail, not what they would offer your friend's dad.

Privately I've seen them sell for 5k with no papers and 6k with B&P

Dealers usually have for £6-9k depending on service history and B&P

    Hope that helps :)

put some vasaline on your lens, take some more pics and then post it on ebay with minimal info/description and 99p start no reserve?

Don't send it in the post for a valuation or service. If he wants to get it serviced, take it to the local Rolex AD and get them to arrange the service, including delivery to Rolex. They will have proper secure methods of transporting the watch. As for a valuation, you'd be best to take a trip to Southport and speak to Mike Wood of The Old Watch Shop. I'm sure he'd be able to provide an up to date valuation.

although in all seriousness ebay can be good value for selling something like this. They only take £40 final value fee, so if you can avoid paypal thats less than 1% commission.

The best place to sell this is through an Auction House. Try Tennants at Layburn. Ask to speak with Adam Wasdell the clock/watch specilaist. He has sold a number of these and dependant on condition make between 5/7k. You can sometimes negotiate a flat fee for items of this value as well. Very safe way to sell and attracts a world-wide audiance of buyers.

Its likely value is £5000/ £6000 the higher if it has original Box and Papers.. Dont post it to anyone , insist buyer MUST collect..Best try Ebay start at £6995.00 collect only with cash payment on collection. You can always try again, often free at weekends or £1.30 to put on ebay anyway.Do NOT accept paypal due to scams. Paypal is a "no go area " if collected anyway due to scams . Like someone previously said as a private seller Ebay charges £40.00 maximum. Put it in a local or any other auction, and someone may end up paying £6000.00.... and you get about £4000.00 . So putting it into an auction is a "mugs " game, and only winner is the Auctioneer. As regards servicing, if its ticking away best left alone as you could end up with a massive service bill, especially from Rolex.
