    That is some FS list.
The 5513s and 5517s with replacement casebacks are 'cheap' in comparison to the full spec ones.

Not being in the know when it comes to Vintage Rolex, why wouldn't he have put this lot up on VRF?

I've just seen them listed on Turf. Spectacular collection! If I had to take one (and had the necessary ££££'s) I think it would be the Explorer II.

Very interesting post, amazing to see the figures placed against these watches and to see what spec differences effect/alter the prices asked.

To not a Rolex collector the whole set is a bunch of rediculously overpriced identically dull watches.

The collectors value has nothing to do with the hardware as is illustrated again by this boxload.

The “good reason“ is all between the ears just like the bulk of the value. Very real but a collectors thing detached from horology.

As another non Rolex fan I totally agree.I just can't see what all the fuss is about, but he's in an enviable position if people will buy them for such ridiculous amounts.

Although I saw this lovely little collection of mil watches last night (and it's even all over Twitter now), it was the Aussie Smiths DeLuxe at £2,000 on MWR that's got me wondering about prices...

Wow... hope all's well at the Wood camp, and he's just making some room - I know the feeling.

Truly spectacular those watches are, some of my faves from his collection are not being offered, and I'm glad as those should not be sold!!

Good Luck on the sales MW, and blessings brother!

Yeah, I'm selling my children...

The big 65 photo over the new year weekend was my first and last opportunity to enjoy seeing me entire Sub collection together. After the photo session, I debated long and hard before selecting a few pieces which I must liberate from the MW Collection, and the rest went back to Gringotts for safe-keeping.

Took about nine hours yesterday to compose the advertisement (not that it shows! Damn lousy piccies! :( ), and I am slowly listing the watches on the appropriate sales-corners. Takes far longer than I'd imagined!!

Why the sale? Well, I got home at half eight last night to find a letter from my solicitors on the doorstep: "So, Mr W, have you got your mortgage sorted for this house you're buying, then?" Unfortunately, I got laughed out of my bank manager's office a few weeks ago when I went cap-in-hand with my 2008-2009 accounts asking for house-buying money. He took one look, and then reminded me that I'd only been paid £6,200 last year... on the strength of which, the bank could lend me £15k...

    All contributions gratefully received...!

No, what he is saying is that the value has little to do with the watch as a small round collection of parts and everything to do with history and brand and a specific group of collectors 'needs' ...... They cease to become just watches and become expensive 'things' .

He's just being provocative for the sake of it. If we were to look at almost any aspect of watch collecting from an objective, value for money perspective, it would be pretty ridiculous and pointless.

Re: Mike's Rolex sale on MWR

Very little of what we engage in on this forum has anything to do with logic.

andy111s' 'definition' from an old thread sums it up very nicely for me:
they transcend the 'Rolex' brand association to become just nice things in their own right
Who wouldn't want to be surrounded by nice things? :)

I hope they all find new homes soon...

I don't think JasonM is being provocative.

It seems, as a newcomer to the forum, that very few people on here are objective when it comes to the Rolex brand. You can see that from the numerous posts that appear when anybody mentions that they think a Submariner/DSD/(substitute any Rolex model here though perhaps not a bi-colour or short hand explorer!) are over rated.

I'm guessing a large number of forum members either own one or aspire to own one and are more than willing to jump in when anybody questions their judgement.

To be honest, rolex are overpriced and overrated, in the end they are just a watch, you'll hear arguments made that they are superior in every way, but it is just a watch at the end of the day, it tells the time, usually poorer than a quartz will.

For me i like the style, i like the design and of course coming into the madness that is watches, rolex were one of the brands to own, i have owned several and currently own an explorer 2 and i'm very happy with that, but it's not 10 times better than a 400 quid watch, that's for sure.

Depends on how you define "better"... I'd say it is at least 5 times better, depending on whether it has pinhole lugs or trit dial, where it might climb to the 7+ range...
