    Reykjavik... any good for watches?

I'm going to Iceland soon and it's one of my grail countries to visit so I can't wait :D I've heard it's stoooopidly expensive there so I doubt I'm going to like what I hear in your replies lol but I wondered if it's any good for watch shopping?

Any tips on Iceland in general would also be hugely appreciated as I'm a complete Icelandic newbie 8)

You should go there, take lots of photos, buy one of their watches, take more photos of that and post all of them here.

    Please :)

    I was there last September.
Not sure about the watch situation however if you DON'T really need the local currency stick to Euro's or US dollars as most of the shops were crying out for anything other than ISK.

Thanks for the tip. I haven't bought any currency yet but have read that they LOVE credit cards there and I have a Santander Zero that doesn't charge fees so was just thinking of buying currency if necessary once we get there. I may just take £50's worth with me so we have something.

Does that sound crazy to you?

Don't forget to claim back the VAT content of your purchase.
Retailers should give you a special receipt which can be redemed somewhere in Reykjavik.
Where I don't know, "google" should give you the answer.

Good tip! I always forget you can do this... is it outside of the UK in general or just outside of Europe?

Lol... you should see our suitcase. It looks like Bear Grylls met Ray Mears and then a few bears shed their fur :D

It's -3C there right now so to be honest, doesn't seem a lot worse to what we've had recently here. The winds are supposed to be strong there though which could make it feel a lot colder I guess. I just want to see the Northern Lights.

Lol, I hope we don't have any Iceland airport staff on TZ :D

I wouldn't let me GF near my watches. She'd have it around 10mins and it'd look like a 30 year old battered watch!

    Fantastic place to visit,

I loved it have been back 3 times in the last year and am planning another trip soon :)

Yes visit Blue Lagoon, and I would recommend you then take a private tour (a whole day if you can stretch to it) with one of the guides using a large 4x4 rather than a coach trip type tour, yes it's a lot more expensive but you will see so much more it's well worth it. I have taken a private tour that collected me in the early afternoon then off sight seeing, up onto one of the Glaciers (that is a MUST do) as night fell we stopped at a good restaurant had a good scoff (for the quality and quantity cheaper than eating in London at a comparable quality restaurant) then chased the Northern lights.

By the way I have missed the lights each time  but you could be in luck as they are quite active at the moment, someone I know in Iceland at the moment is enjoying some very good shows.

Enjoy yourself, abuse the credit card as that's what it's for :D

    Nigel

Oh and it's not that cold but if the GF feels the cold buy her a local jumper they are absolutely the nuts!!

Thanks for the tips. I'm reading my Iceland guide book as we speak but there's nothing like people's own experiences.

Would the 4x4 trip be bookable via the hotel or are there websites I should be looking at before we go?

I like that. Like you say, you can enjoy it and then get your money back if you ever sell it. Can't beat that :D

The Hotel should have info and be able to book, but I will look up the web address of the guys I used and pm it to you later in the week you can email them to book direct, they read English (better than I write it anyway)

English is very widely spoken, I believe it is compulsory lessons at school now (unlike England!).

    Now off to bed :drunken:

Uhhhh good lord, I was waiting for it and Vicky was the culprit lol.

As long as Kerry Catona and Jason Donovan are nowhere near me, I'll be as happy as possible.

That was really helpful Jocke, thanks. We're hoping to go to the Geysirs so I'll try and get that picture your camera missed

It looks so baron there... wish we were going for longer so I could really explore the place.

We had a meal in the most northerly Indian in the world - £70 for 2, set meal!

If you can hire a car (recommend http://www.sagacarrental.is), it is a long day drive there and back but the lagoon at Jokulsarlon along the SE coast is a fantastic sight; also you pass a great high waterfall Seljalandsfoss that you can walk behind, on the way - waterproofs needed!

Iceland VAT is 25% so that is quite a bit off if you can find a nice watch duty free. Take your own swimming gear to the Blue Lagoon so you don't have to hire!

I've learnt more here than in my guide book so thanks for all the tips and pictures so far. 25% does sound like a bargain is a possibility so I'll definitely be on the lookout for jewellery shops ;-)

Don't worry, I'm like a Japanese tourist on speed... if there's one thing I can assure, it's lots of pictures lol. Whether they're any good though...

Puffin as a food surprised me when I read my Iceland book but after reading they also eat singed sheep heads and putrid (hope I spelt that correct) shark meat, it sounded quite normal. I don't think any of them will be on my dinner plate, although I may experiment with some of the nicer sounding more exotic food.
