The only conclusion I can come to is that I must have 'issues' as I have quite a few chronos and must be seeking out watches that are more likely to cause me stress :)

    Timing things

Lots of things, although usually anything I'd like to know how long I've been doing, or not doing, something for.

Meetings, eggs, travelling, working, flying, cooking, quizzing, cycling...

Timing others doing those kinds of things...

Sometimes I just time the timer to see how it's timing is, and on the odd occasion I just let it run because I want to.

I was wearing a Poljot Strela at church yesterday. So I used the chrono to time the vicar's sermon. Just because I could.

    regards,
    Nick

P.S. 4 minutes 56 seconds in case you were wondering.

My wife bought me a lovely Seiko chrono as an engagement present 8 years ago and I'm pretty confident I have no idea how to activate the dials! Occasionally I press the buttons at work if I'm bored - it's fun to try and work out how it functions without reference to the manual in any way.

Used to use them for flight test work (digital more often than analog though), but now only for:

cooking, walks, occasional runs, rest periods between sets working out, meditation sessions, parking, etc. I actually use timers quite a lot, and prefer digital to analog, not because of 1/1000th sec BS, but because they're just easier to read. I also use countdown timers as often, or more often than the chrono.

I do remember checking my speedometer once with a Speedy though. :D

    Cheers,
    Bruce

This is a fantastic question. I have never and will probably never have the need to use my chrono. I disagree with spending lots of money on a watch that does not however have it as I find it makes the face complete a la Daytona, Royal Oak, Offshore which are my favoured modern SS Gents Watches. My major exception to this are vintage Rolex Diver's which given their character make me oversee this trait.

I'm surprised by how many use them for timing cooking - surely a countdown timer is required so you get an alarm when the time's up rather than having to check to see when it's done?

I used mine for cooking, too, and to time how fast my son could run twice around the island in our cul-de-sac. Then I used it to help fund the purchase of another watch!

I honestly use my chronograph (and countdown bezel) pretty-much every day for journeys, tasks, meetings, cooking, tea infusions etc. etc. I'd feel pretty lost if I had a non-chronograph now I think.

It's probably a bit like the iPhone; before, when I wasn't able to do more than make a call with my mobile, I didn't need anything else. Now I can't live without emails, calendar, tv, radio, books, Angry Birds, news, weather etc...

If you need to turn a steak over every min then it's handier to rotate one's wrist than fiddle with a cheap plastic timer. Of course you could just wait until the second hand reached the 12 using a non-chrono watch, or just memorise the position of the second and minute hands, but using that argument, an awful lot has no reason to exist so I won't bother ;).

For baking, I can certainly see what you mean. I know nothing of the black art of baking.
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

Have never used the chrono function for anything. If I need a stop watch it will be mounted an a dashboard/cockpit coaming.

Used to use my Casio countdown timer for 6 minute fixing at sea.

A bezel is all that is required for most tasks, me thinks - that's what I use.

Got rid of all my chronos because:

    1. I never used them
    2. I stupidly worried that they would stop working and I would be faced with a big service bill :?

Re: What do you use your Chrono For?

I have no need for a chrono and that is the reason I dont have one.
I did buy the PRS17C from Eddie but only because I wanted one before they sold out, had it a short while and then sold it.
I dont particulary like them and find them too busy and too many buttons.
There is nothing I cannot time using the bezel on one of my many divers watches.

Re: What do you use your Chrono For?

Divers bezel is sufficient for cooking and parking meters - for fancier timing I'll use a G-shock, which is also useful for its alarm feature.

I do own a PRS-17C, ashamed to admit I never wear it - I now realise chronos are too busy for me, not my cup of tea. I've owned a couple of Speedy Pro's as well, both flipped within a month - left me cold, in spite of the enthusiasm on various fora :?
