Seiko Divers - What to look for?

Hi all. First time post here. I've heard mention of this place for a while on Pistonheads watch forum and thought I'd finally sign up. I've recently bought a Seiko 5, and while I appreciate it it comes up a little small on the wrist. What I really want is a diver. When the recession ends I'll be after an Omega Planet Ocean of some variety but until then, I've started looking at Seiko divers. I'm initially attracted to the SKX007, and I'm not keen on the chunky bezel of the Monster. What else is out there in the world of Seiko automatic divers for under 100 quid?

hi surfr. welcome to the forum. loads of choice for under a ton, especially if youre not in a hurry, but the 007 will be pretty hard to beat in terms of spec and bulletproofness. atb, dave

It depends on a couple of factors

Do you want a new watch, or will you consider second hand and accept the risks associated with buying a used watch.

The SkX007 is a great watch for the money, but if you don't mind second hand, the 6309 divers are well worth considering.

...agree with the flemster , but if youre going to use it for watersports ( which i assume you are given your username ) make sure its been serviced and pressure tested, last thing you want to see is your pride and joy filling up with sea water

Good point, I hadn't considered the users name.

I don't even wear my vintage divers in the shower

Re: Seiko Divers - What to look for?

Don't worry about the sea! Contrary to my username, I haven't surfed in years and even then it was only Kayaks. I've had the same internet pseudonym since 1993. These days I only get wet in the shower, in the swimming pool our out on the bike (pedal). I take watches off for all of the aforementioned.

I'm happy to buy 2nd hand nad have been perusing eBay. I've seen a couple of 6309's come up and they tick all of my boxes, but they do look as though the body is considerably bulkier than the crown. Is this really the case or are some photos accentuating it's features perhaps?

Re: Seiko Divers - What to look for?

depends what 6309 youre talking about, i used to have a 6309-7049 and i found it a lovely watch, personally i dont 'do' vintage anymore, if i were you id just start on a 007 /009 and then when you have a bit more cash get a samurai. lovely watches.

edit - please dont buy off the bay unless youve done your homework! theres an awful lot of tat out there

another edit - if you want a cheapy to start you off, you wont go far wrong with this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/J-SPRINGS-SEIKO-P ... 447wt_1330
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

Richie, yup that's absolutely gorgeous. The Oyster bracelet completely finishes the watch off in my opinion.

    007 should go with a solid oyster...or a sumo

How about an SBCM023, with the high accuracy 8F35 movement? Sensibly priced yet a very discerning choice. :)

Following my own advice, I just placed an order for an SBCM023 from Chino Watch. :)

I wanted a HEQ to use as a daily wearer, Breitling are too expensive and have nothing I like, I was looking at a Sinn UX GSG9 as favourite, but the cost and complexity of battery change put me off more than a little. So I finally pulled the trigger on this, after mulling it over for about 4 months.

Now to order some straps from Eddie. :)

Wow, that looks great. That's going on my theoretical Watch Aquisition List.

Re: Seiko Divers - What to look for?

Well I finally took a punt on a 1 month old example on eBay. It comes on a green NATO and could well be sold by someone on here I suppose?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0444697918

Next up is a Super Oyster with solid end links :D

Can't wait for it to arrive and can see me flipping my SNK809K2 as it's just too small for my 8.25" wrists.

Quite possibly. Considering you can buy new from Hong Kong on eBay for 115, the finishing price of 96 is a bit steep but I just had to have it

Won the Super Oyster and the seller talked me into buying a proper Spring Bar tool so I trundled off to buy myself a Bergeon 6767-F! The list of shiny purchases is growing quickly! I think it could be too late for me. I'm doomed already.

I have to agree with Sub´erman: You can never go wrong with a SKX007

Of course, the SKX009 is also a great piece - pepsi piece, that is :)

Re: Seiko Divers - What to look for?

It's here! I left the house wearing my SNK809 and decided to snap a pocket shot before leaving the house.

But soon after I'd sat down at my desk, I get the SKX007 delivered to me :D

And side by side for size comparison. I can see why the SNK809 felt too small for my 8 1/4" wrists now.

Re: Seiko Divers - What to look for?

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I think that you should stick to the SKX007. There are several diver models, but this is a classic one and you can not find a better watch at this price range IMHO. I think that this is a watch every divers watches collection must have. I had sold mine a few months ago and I regretted it, so I got a new one a while later.

Oh I'm definitely keeping it. It's the SNK809 I'm thinking about swapping out, now that the 007 has arrived :)

Yes, I would swap out the SNK809, but then again I'm a divers watches fan.

I'm getting quite into the Seiko divers now, already have a couple of Zenos (Army Diver GMT 300m) (Airplane Diver 500m) and fancied a wee change so I've just bought the SKX009J and awaiting delivery. I really like the look of the 7002 watches too.

SKX 007 is a great watch.

Many of the big expensive brands (I don’t dare to mention any, but I got proofs;)) aren’t able to make such flawless dials as Seiko IMO.
    My 007.

IMO you can't go wrong with an SKX007. Of my watches the 007 is the most worn, it will stand up to almost everything and looks so good.

I saw an interesting Seiko 5 diver on another forum somewhat reminiscent of the Fifty Fathoms, the SNZH55N.
