Citizen - Promaster Tough.
Evening :)
Having just received this week the tegimented sinn 857 (and being very impressed with the feel and finish) I wondered who makes the toughest watches.
are there other comapanies pursuing the tool watch build like Sinn and damasko ?
Sinn features its tegimented steel along with their Uboat Submarines steel for improved hardening
Dasmasko has it patented "Ice hardening" process for their watch cases..
Are there any more makers in this line of "tough" watches ?
Citizen - Promaster Tough.
theres that watch that they drive a caterpillar tracked vehicle over or a tank or something in the advert. ugly looking thing, cant remember what it is though.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Casio G-Shock seems like an obvious candidate in the 'tough watch' category. Tough, and fairly disposable to boot!

This watch was in the SAS

Not my other Gs - they are too nice! 8)

G shocks seem pretty tough but some of my vintage Omegas are over 40 years old so...
i reckon seiko ,citizen or g shocks. All proven to be tough.Cant remember ever seeing many builders, squaddies, laboures etc wearing damaskos, sinn or any other high end "tough watch"
It's got to be a Seiko diver of course...

Mechanical?
My MM300, it's a rock 8)

Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!
My old Explorer's been 1,385 ft below sea level and 24,000 ft above sea level!.. How tough is that?
:P
Mike.
Has to be a quartz really. Doesn't matter how tough the case of a Damasko or Sinn is since the watch will be buggered if you drop it a couple of feet onto a concrete floor!
Well actually I was equating tough to mean knocking chunks out of the case when wack the door out of the office etc etc :)
You know desk diver tough ;)
Check these BAD BOYS out!

I've worn my Superocean more or less daily for ten years now. I rarely take it off and being a clumsy bugger, I've frequently clonked it on various immovable objects, yet it shows very few signs of age and has always worked faultlessly.
G-shock gets my vote, Does anyone remember the adverts on tv and in magazines etc from the late 90's? They put G-shocks through a variety of situations to prove they were tough as nails -dropped one out the window of a tall building, used one as a ice hockey puck, strapped one to the front tyre of a mountain bike then went trailblazing, etc.
I 'baby' all my watches but i'm ashamed to say i put my g-shock through a series of mini tests when goaded by some fool at work about there being no difference between a real g-shock and his fake g-shock he had got on holiday in Hong Kong - needless to say my g-shock didnt let me down and his watch ended up in pieces
Anytime i've been going snowboarding, mountain biking, rock climbing, etc - the g-shock is the only piece i think of wearing and its stood up to everything i've thrown at it. Its the cheapest watch i own but still one of the best if you know what i mean. 8)

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.
Toughest in what way?
If it comes to shock proof then it has to be a digital quartz else if mechanical its without dought a Rolex sports watch, they have some of the strongest springs.
Waterproof then its the http://www.20000feet.com its also bullet proof but not sure if its wearable as a watch though at nearly 30mm thickness.
If you are looking for magnetic protection then its IWC with its 500000 AM Ingenieur.
Hard, and scratch proof, then its the Rado V10K. A watch entirely made from artificial diamond and about four times as hard as the tegimented Sinn surface.
if it is.... the list can go on and on.....

I've clonked my MRG-7500 G shock a few times with no effect....ti with DLC coating...mind you I'm sure a ice hardened Damasko case could take a decent smack !

I've thrown my GW6900 down stairs and at the bedroom wall a few times in the interests of research and without a mark on it.
For case material hard to beat a Damasko or tegimented Sinn, for overall toughness a G-Shock or Citizen Promaster Tough. I rather like my Seiko Darth Tuna though - ceramic outer shroud seems very tough to me so far.
Cheers

Ive had a Traser 200m diver for over ten years now, and it has been battered about quite a bit! and still got has plenty of Mileage left. :)

Are some of those recased Sinns?Originally Posted by roadkingrider

Pointless question - i'm sure my frail old body would give up before ANY watch in an endurance test to destruction.
And if you aren't wearing the watch during testing what is the point :D
Some of us aren't frail or old!

No. UTS make their own cases. As a matter of fact, the owner, Herr Spinner, makes the cases himself. About as close to handcrafted as modern watches can be. I want one.Originally Posted by Filterlab

Nor am i, but i would be and so would you if subject to being plunged to depths of 12000ft, temperatures of -60, being dropped onto concrete from a great height, being run over by a tracked vehicle etc etc - need i go on.Originally Posted by jason recliner

 If by "frail" you mean "dead, and by "old" you mean "dead", then yes. I couldn't agree more!
But I have done, and still do, a bunch of suff that at best would leave your typical mechanical dive watch looking very second hand. And at worst would leave it very frail and old (as defined above). So I definitely appreciate the inherent toughness of my Gulfman for specific activities. Plus, I like to think it's rugged handsome style rubs off on me a little :D

g-shock
I have had one for about 12 years and its still solid
G-Shock gets my vote for being one of the toughest watches out there.
Mine still works after many years and a lot of abuse.
Yes, I have had a few of those including the 3000m Pro Diver - they are very well made watches and Herr Spinner is a joy to deal with. Also very pleasent to chat with to boot.Originally Posted by roadkingrider
