My two money pits. 500hp forester daily, and my 3.6 996 C2. There's a ratty 944 turbo tucked away somewhere too..

Love to see all the nice things on this thread!

If you were going to pick a standard Forester, which would be the one to get?

By the sound of the additions above, presumably the stock engine and drive train are fairly bullet-proof?

Assuming you mean a turbo. Subaru turbo engines have a bad reputation for head gaskets and bottom ends, and the 2.5's also for ring land failure when tuned.

Having said that, on a stock engine (or mildly tuned eg on stock size turbo) in my experience if they've been serviced well then they are fine. I ran the stock 2.5 in this at 220 wheel hp to 100,000 miles and it looked great when it was pulled apart at that point. The 2.0 engines are stronger, and the forester's have smaller turbos than the imprezas so they tend to last even better.

But the best advice really is keep something in your back pocket for at least a head gasket top end rebuild.. you might be lucky, you might not.

Drivetrains are excellent. The 5 speeds will only take around 350hp

STI's are always the strongest and have all the better supporting parts (brakes, drivetrain etc) but they command strong money at the moment and the engines are not a lot stronger (forged pistons are the only real difference between the ej255 XT engine and the STI EJ257)

Lots of nice standard 2.0 XT cars around. Also a good halfway house is a JDM cross sports which is a kind of halfway house between an XT and an STI. But most are autos

Hope that helps!! Feel free to let me know if you need any more info, happy to help if I can.

Just realised that doesn't answer your which one to buy question.. if you've got the budget get an STI.. you can still find them for £10k ish. If not I'd probably err towards a manual 2.0 xt and do some upgrades to make it what I want.. which I pretty much what I did with mine.

    Taff, that's brilliant.

I occasionally make runs to Brecon from East Anglia and have been thinking for some time about getting something a bit more capable in more challenging conditions. Sounds like this is a possible candidate.

Cheers, some interesting metal over the years; love to hear your views once the G82 is run in.

Will have to get out in one at some point to compare vs the prior generation I owned, but could not get confident with the damping when pushing on.

Now long time lurker JonMurgie was the first to post a car on this thread. The photo has long gone, but it was a lovely Forrester STI in blue. It looks the nuts.

Sorry to disappoint but I am a hopeless driver, so I prefer to use a motorcycle. My daily ride now is a 650cc single, but I used an 1150 Adventure for 14 years and racked up 225,000 miles on it. I had the R80GS to use as well and for a while a tatty old standard 1150GS with a long range tank, that was sold with 98,000 on it. I still have the 80GS.

    The daily ride:

This was my daily for 5 or so years, about 10k plus a year. It now just pops out for an occasional blast about the back lanes.

Stock WRX with Prodrive performance pack - putting out 273bhp from a recent check - not messed about with/tuned but serviced with no expense spared, plus a few improved handling components etc., and an STI front bumper (after I cracked the original and could not get a replacement WRX one for love nor money!)

Yes I PXd my 59-plate E89 35i DCT (bought from Sales Corner) for the new one.

I had the E89 for over five years and really liked it, but for me the G29 is a massive step up in just about every respect - performance, handling, equipment/tech, refinement, ride, comfort, interior and overall sense of occasion are off the scale by comparison IMO.

Do you have more than one car? I only ask as I'm looking at estates at the minute and the 5 series/E class/A6/V90 series cars are much better value and way better equipped than the 3 series/c class/a4/v60 etc.

I'm guessing it's hard to park on the high street?

I think you’ve nailed it on the head, the E89 lacked a sense of occasion compared to the previous generation. Glad to see it has returned again.

I imported it about 3.5 years ago and hadn’t intended on doing much with it. But quickly found it was way too well looked after to modify so I’ve kept standard. It’s only done 43k miles so I’m just maintaining and enjoying it

Agree. I haven’t had any experience of BMW or Volvo, but always thought that the A6 and E class were much better value (than A4/C class) when comparing like for like. Actually at one point a new A6 was marginally cheaper than an A4 when you spec’d the A4 to the same level.
The other thing, when buying used, is that that it seems to be easier to get better cared for/lower mileage/higher spec examples of E class than C class. That’s why I’m currently driving a 2013 E class coupe with every option ticked and only 26k miles - there was only 13k when I bought it two years ago.

I always wonder what Mercedes drivers get up to. Always the lowest miles used of any "premium" car company. Are the cars so bad they just don't use them? We have a GLC and it's average at best. My bottom spec 116d drove better.

Part of me wants to get a V60/V90 cross country but I'm sure that will be the depreciation game on expert mode which means we'll have to run it into the ground.

Funny how my wife swore she would never have an estate due to them being "funeral cars" and now we're 3-5 weeks away from a Tesla Model 3 being delivered she's sending me links to estates on auto trader. She definitely hates the Tesla.
