It really is ok.
I would never have considered Mercedes before.
It's well made. Great spec out of the box.
Great MPG. It costs me the same as a Mondeo Titanium in Co car Tax (give or take).

The only thing not tested is the service from the Dealer.

It's RHD in theatre on Ops in Kosovo.

I've been to Princess Royal Barracks in Gutersloh. It's a big camp, formerly an RAF camp before the Army took it over, built by the Germans before WWII, for those interested :)

BTW, what's with the HPP lamp on the tow hitch? A bit vulnerable there isn't it? It's also obviously a LHD model you have as well.

Hi Sancho, the xd retired after only 19.000 km in service, pretty much shortly after issue, and before Sept. 11th, so its one of the few that escaped early on just little damage ("powerful" tdi + G90 + rain + young squaddie and the rabbit across the street excuse)
It lives a pampered enthusiasts cars live in my barn, while I still need to work :lol:
The old oil lamp (German army issue) was just there for a laugh during a camping weekend)

Beauty of the xd is the versatility, now the roof is off and it gradually turns into an RDV (wanted to keep the tall cage, rather than fitting the wmik cage) but I am too shy to post a picture of THAT here :-)

No, not 2 litres, and nowhere near as impressive as the beach buggy on the previous page. :shock:

1776cc with Engle 110 cam and full flow oiling. Twin dual throat Dellorto DRLA36s, stock heads, electronic 009 dizzy, Bugpack merged header and hide-away muffler.

It actually goes pretty well for such a "modest" motor, and is my first attempt at an engine build, and, apart from the machining and balancing, it's all my own work.



Front beam is narrowed just enough to compensate for the extra track of the CB dropped spindles, and fitted with a custom made anti-roll bar to suit the narrowed beam. Back brakes are from a later model with 50% wider drums than the originals, gearbox is also from a later car to give it longer legs, but I swapped the long axles for the short originals to keep the back wheels under the 'guards.

General lack of refinement, only a 5 speed box, smokes like a diesel from the early 90's despite only 45k on clock, clutch showing signs that it is already due for replacement, uneconomical, air con not very good, soft suspension, poor roof rail design means it takes an age to get my bike rack on the roof, the list goes on...

My main car I haven't got a picture of Mercedes SL 500 with AMG alloys and exhaust. It gets used a lot less than the Mazda as though its roof is electric it seems to take forever to use, whereas the Mazdas roof is off (or on) in seconds!

No pics, because it was pre-digital, but I built the third Cal-Looker in Britain. The first two were built by a guy called Rick Pearman, and Neil Birkett, who went on to edit VW Motoring magazine.

Mine was based on a 1970 1500 Beetle, but I used Day Mouldings wings, and an early spare wheel well. The tail pipe cut-outs were welded up, and the engine cover and fuel filler cap were louvered. I had Top-Line Parts one-piece front windows, with matching rears. The body was painted in off-white. It was lowered by removal of a front leaf and rotating the rear torsion bars. The gearbox was standard, with Urethane mounts and an Empi clutch. Wheels were replica Empi 8-spokes - the first set in the country. It had KYB Gas-a-just shocks on the rear, and Spax adjustables on the front.

The interior had a pair of Wolfrace Recaro-esque front seats with the rear trimmed to match. I made aluminium panels to replace the grilles either side of the speedo, with VDO gauges for oil temperature and pressure, revcounter, voltmeter and cylinder head temperature. I had a Mountney steering wheel and a Hurst shifter with reverse lock-out.

And the engine - a case was line-bored and I had an Okrasa counter-weighted crank, which had been nitrided. Porsche 912 conrods (shot-peened and stress-relieved) and Mahle forged pistons. The capacity was calculated to be 1904cc.

The valvetrain was an Engle 110 cam, with Gene Berg lightweight followers and Berg pushrods. Standard size valves, but the heads were lightly gas-flowed and the valves had a three-angle grind.

The oil system used an external filter and a "Top Hat" on the sump.
Weber 40 IDF carbs on Berg manifolds, with a Berg linkage and K&N filters. Ignition was by a 009 distributor and Bosch Blue coil.

It took a while to get it together, as these were the days before the internet. I used to wait until 8pm and then order parts over the phone from the likes of Claudes Buggies, Top Line and Gene Berg, who were all in California.

I ran the car for a couple of years, then sold it to a record producer. I don't know if it's still around.

The third Cal Looker in Britain, that's quite a claim! Sounds like a cool car, in any case. Interesting collection of parts for the motor, too.
