What sort of cost are you talking about here, ball park? I’ve often wondered what a fibreglass repair and repaint would cost, and who could do it. It’s pretty specialised work these days.

I can answer this as I've had two cars done by two different places. Both full body, but the first was just gelcoat and paint, which was £6k, while the other was my Elan, full reskin (tissue, gelcoat, etc.) but also reshaping various bits to fit better (making the doors thinner to be flush with the body, that sort of thing) which was £14k. The cheapest I was quoted for sorting out surface crazing, blisters and paint was £3k, but there were absolutely no guarantees that all of it wouldn't reappear within a year or two.

There are a few well respected fiberglass shops, but the two we used are Option 1 (for the Elan) and SMS.

@adigra I’m in West Yorkshire too if you fancy a ride out. You might be missing the smell of unburned hydrocarbons and vinyl

Circa £3k for mine, that's for correcting all blistering issues across the tops of both doors and refinishing across parts of the front and rear clams for the stone chips. If you were to see how the car looks now you'd never guess at the cost, not if you weren't familiar with such issues and materials anyway. Being honest about it it's quite gutting, especially so as all my finances are supposed to be directed towards my property that I moved into in January.

There's slight consolation in that the car's value appears to have jumped up a little relatively recently due to Lotus announcing that the chassis will be discontinued this year with new models in the pipeline. What I'll spend on the repairs will be made up, mostly, in equity I have within the vehicle though it's still money spent... Even without that jump it's still worth marginally more than I paid for it all those years back, there aren't many frequently used cars on the road that can claim that.

I miss the sound of those Webers! Where in WY are you? I'm in Ilkley. We'll take the Sunbeam Tiger out for a drive tomorrow for the Drive-it Day.

That makes sense. I've long accepted that no car worth having will be cheap to run and from time to time there will be a painful bill.

Oh tiger cool! I’m the other side of Halifax what route have you planned? Mine are Dellortos

Oh of course Dellortos in a 130, just like in the Sprint. My father in law used to have a '73 Sprint (which his brother still has).

I think we'll head out into the Dales. I tend to go towards Grassington and then depending on how much time I have either do a big loop of the Dales, or I do a smaller loop back through Blubberhouses (which is probably what we'll do tomorrow).

It’s a good hour to Bolton Abbey so I guess we won’t get up the Dale tomorrow. Would be good to coincide some time

Just realised I don’t think I’d put up any pictures of my new car, bought this on a lockdown whim in December. Lovely to be back in a sports car again, it’s a fab drive.

This was it’s first wash last weekend!

What is the colour? Looks like mat pearl. Whatever it is, looks fantastic.

Love the car. Never driven one, but it reminds me so much of the Japanese cars I loved in the 90's.

Thanks, I can highly recommend it. Good amount of power to feel like you can stretch it a bit too.

It’s Pearl white, albeit not matt, I’ll get a couple more photos to show it tomorrow if it’s sunny. The colour pops in sunlight, looks fab. It has tinted windows too and the black glass really suits it, gives it a real stylised Manga type vibe.

I got a used 1966 Chevy Impala Super Sport. It had the small 283 engine with an automatic transmission. Not much get-up-and-go. The rear window was always rusting at the top allowing rain to get inside and slowly destroy the shelf behind the back seat
Changing oil has always been pain due to the thin black rubber/plastic gasket, that rested around the top of the oil filter canister, would stick to the engine and require an ice-pick to remove.
Still my first car got me where I needed to go. Love it! *heart*
Maybe in the foreseeable future I will get some replacement but not sure as new cars cost too much for me.

Oh wow that brings back memories, my best mate bought one of these years ago then put it through a hedge when he misjudged a bend, ended up on its roof and written off, he still says it was his favourite car…

That Integra! Love it. I remember drawling over one at the Earls Court London Motor Show when I was 17. That’s a car I would love to own. Outstanding.

Matt, that is stunning - love the noise of these things when they are pushing on, best sound on any non hyper car today I think.

New company car delivered beginning of March, A3 40TFSie S-Line. It's a plug in hybrid so very low BIK and as I mostly get the train, that was the biggest consideration.

The tech is nice and it goes OK, the build quality isn't leagues ahead in my opinion, like some people may claim. I dump our 2010, 144k mile Prius at the station most days (owned from year old) and I very much doubt the Audi would stand up as well to similar levels of punishment that the old girl has been through.

The 30 (ish) miles EV mode is enough for my wife most days for dropping kids at school etc.

Thanks guys. It’s a 2018 C63s (so power increased to 510hp) with premium pack, switchable sports exhaust, AMG sports seats, satin black forged wheels, panoramic roof, 360 camera, Burmeister stereo and a few other bits. Exterior is polar white. The interior is black with white piping. It’s only got 10k miles on the clock and is the best condition car I have ever bought.

There a couple of things to change to make it perfect. This is no Apple CarPlay so I am swapping out the screen for the new style one next week. It also has the piano black centre console which I will swap for Ash, or may get it wrapped.

Really pleased with it overall, it’s lovely just cruising but biblical when in sports+, I haven’t dare try race yet!

Lovely car Matt. I have a GLC with the same piano black interior and hate it. Didn't know you could change the screen to get a newer software/Android Auto. Are you able to share roughly how much that change will be?

Thanks- The screen costs 550 and is diy plug and play. A friend did it and it’s great. Or this company can do it for you for 690:

    https://braybrooks.co.uk/product/ret...-for-mercedes/

Sounds pricey but you can take it out a sell it when the car goes.

Really cool, solves most of the issues with the OEM infotainment. Enjoy the new car!

Drove out into the Dales for the first time since I got the 997 back last week. My father-in-law and I have been doing Sunday drives into the Dales as a bit of a treat since the weather got better. It's become a highlight of the week.

My car is manual with sport chrono. In gear acceleration on overboost is so savage that it will break traction on all four wheels in 3rd in the dry. I love high revving NA cars such as the GT3, but all that turbo torque is way too addictive. Epic car.

A few years back Clarkson did this

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuAN...hannel=TopGear

The longest day this year is Monday 21st June, myself,my wife as co pilot and a fellow Jag owner and friend Single Storey Steve will depart Penzance at 21.36 pm, him in his X351 XJL 5.0 and i will be driving one of these,

My 2003 X350 Super V8( if i can get my brake upgrade sorted) or my V70 D5, less performance but no fuel stops.

The distance past Stonehenge is 430 miles Vs the M5/M4 route towards london at 452 miles and the deadline is 0430 Am at Ness Point Lowestoft. A road shootout Vs sustained cruise on the motorway.

Sounds fun, just watch out for the speed and average speed cameras, whichever route you take - there are a few more than when Clarkson did his trip.

We have a new arrival, chuffed to bits with it, the things immaculate and can swallow all our gear plus 3 children with ease
Drive it 150 miles home from London to Lincolnshire and with mixed driving conditions achieved 39.3mpg (calculated) the onboard computer wasn’t far off though as it said 39.8
Needless to say this replaced my trusty D2 ES TD5 and they are poles apart in terms of road manners, it’s like getting out of a tractor and into an armchair it’s that comfy!

I drive a BMW 320d Touring, bought new in 2007. Very boring compared to some of the cars here.

Unfortunately the ABS Pump (the DSC in BMW parlance) has packed in, and I have been quoted £2600 by the dealer to replace it; this is probably more than the car is worth. So I am in a dilemma as to whether to cough this up, or look around for a new car. We were hoping to not have to do this until a few years time, when we retire. My wife is not keen on the latest BMW models - the body shape is far too masculine, and what have they done to the front grill?

We're starting to think that we should just bite the bullet and get the 320 fixed - better the devil you know than one you don't. Neither us are into cars, and wouldn't have much of a clue when it comes to buying a new one. Our knowledge amounts to watching cars pass by and saying "I like that one", or "that looks horrible".

Are there any BMW independent specialists your way? Or even any other reputable garage? I'd bet you'd be able to have that replaced for a chunk less than the dealer quote.

You can probably cut the cost by half at least by going to an independent. BMW will have to order through their network at full cost (and of course charge their labour prices), while an indy can source from anywhere (as in reduced NOS, etc.) and their labour will be much less.

Regarding the newer cars being too masculine, I completely agree. I really don't care for the current trend of a lot of "premium" brands making all their models look all snarly and aggressive. I think BMW and Audi are particularly bad at this and even their most normal cars look more aggressive then their M and RS models did 10 years ago. They must know their market though and that's what majority of the people want.
