    Hamilton Mechanical Help

    Hi, just bought this on eBay for the wife (pre-emptive strike to pave the way for a PRS-14), and wondered if anyone could enlighten me as to the full meaning of the numbers:

    (Terrible photos I know!)

    I know the 73 means 1973 and I believe that the string beginning W10 is the military spec involved, but what about the rest?

    Thanks!

    It so happens that a very good explanation was given on the same subject on another forum this very day:

    Interesting. I also bought similar Hamilton a little time ago. My watch is also from 1973 as most what (pictures) I have seen.

    Is the price secret? (I paid 120 euro)

    JP, paid £56 for mine, so about ?80? Works fine, although the winding motion is very stiff, seems to keep reasonable time.

    Yep, about 80 (or 82) euro.
    Sounds like good deal (or mine was very very bad who knows).

    Mine looks about same condition but winding motion is not stiff. Is yours all the time stiff or only beginning winding?

    Stiff throughout the wind, I'm going to monitor it over the next few days to see what the timekeeping is like. I did see another one go on eBay the same day I bought mine for about £80, so I suspect I got a good deal.

    Better to follow some time. Propably old oil is "junked". If it will stay stiff it is better to go to watch smith and open/clean it.

    I've had a few CWC W10's that were very stiff to wind and change the time. After a professional service the ETA 2750/Ham 649 winds very smoothly, so I guess you really have to factor in the cost of a service for any watch bought remotely.

    Just now read this post, here's a reply anyhow:

    The numbers at the top look strikingly like an out of sequence NATO stock number, which might be 6645-99-523-8290. Then the meaning would be
    6645 = watches
    99 = specified by a UK bureau
    523-8290 = this particular kind of watch.

    The other number is either a serial number or a contract number, I reckon.

    Could be wrong of course!

    Cheers,

    It's the yearly issue no. ... watch no. ## issued in 1973
