A bit of subtle irony maybe, but an outer cardboard box is just a bit of disposable packaging. "Oh! my Cadbury's bar of chocolate had a scuff on the outer wrapper. Should I take it back?" I suppose...

Isn't there a shop in Burlington Arcade that just specialisers in Rolex outer boxes? I'm sure there are homage versions available as well. Not to mention fakes! Of course, there is always the grey...

You should definitely NOT restore the box. Destroying the patina will devalue the watch since it won't any longer be original! You know, its part of the history and all that.
