Thanks, also to Schofie, MrSmith, Dynam0humm for the responses - am delighted to see so much thought put into gear choice - I had begun to think people were buying enormously wide ratios simply...
I would go along with that, and indeed there are some good offers on Shimano cassettes around; paradoxically, I understand that 10 speed systems have a wider chain than 9s.
Coming, as I do, from...
I'd say the Triban as I think others on here have tried and liked; also FWIW I think the Alpha is trying a bit too much to be flash with the behind the fork aero brakes and paint job. I used to...
In the 1990s someone (well, sometwo) were time-trialling a tandem in which the the stoker sat at the front, but faced backwards, towards the steersman, for aerodynamic effect.

Apologies once more if I repeat the bleedin' obvious, but if you've not ridden on the road for a while, there may be a temptation to ride...
Thanks benny.c and MrSmith.
I can fully understand the wider platform is better over a distance and once you get into the sport. I would still think MTB systems are better for easing into cycling...
I'm a bit out of touch, but the advantage of the Time ATAC pedals was that the system allowed for 'float' to compensate for knee issues, whereas at the time none of the road systems had this feature...
FWIW, and apologies if it's being discussed before.
I also have used various clipless pedal systems over the years, and a few things always struck me (as I type, I realise the irony of that...
