In a nutshell!
Good example, absolutely zero wrong with being a secretary, why try to dress it up? Very insecure.
Very true. You see the same on quiz shows, the hosts asks "what do you do?" every time, if they answer "retired", as I would do he or she then always asks "what did you do?". It doesn't bloody...
Thank you, glad to be through the worst.
I saw ex workmates of mine bored, but their lives had just been work, and overtime to pay for holidays and kitchens. Some worked way past maxing out their...
I retired at 53, I'm 58 in a couple of weeks. Four weeks ago I was rushed to hospital with a pulmonary embolism and lung infection. There were a couple of episodes where I seriously thought my time...
That is a danger in the early days but soon wears off.
Sorry to hear about your neighbour, sounds like he was an entertaining character!
I'm sure you will adapt easily. Don't get me wrong, I love a drink, I'll have a couple of pints tomorrow afternoon by the sea, and a bottle of red tomorrow night. Friday is my 'big' day :)
I retired early and I find that now I drink a lot less, its now purely for pleasure rather than a stress buster or after work reward.
Very good :)
Stealth pensioner!
Who are you calling a senior citizen?
Not there yet Ian ;)
Thank you :) .
Obvious key physical requirements include no debts, home owned outright, and some savings for unexpected expenses (boiler going etc).
Pure luck includes no ongoing expensive medical...
Definitely, we are on less than half that, eat out a couple of times a week, pint when I feel like, campervan etc. £50k would fund an amazing if fairly carefull lifestyle.
No, I don't suppose it is Ryan. But you also have "£1k p/m eating out/leisure" on your list. I'd count that and your spending money/clothes as pretty much the same pot, both are basically the money...
Go for it and best of luck. On the assumption you get everything paid off plus have savings it's surprising how little you can live on and still enjoy life.
Our pensions are less than a third of...
A week this Friday I will have been retired exactly four years, now halfway through being 57.
I have no financial advice, you can either afford it or you've buggered up.
But regarding lifestyle,...
Thanks, things could always be better, but I definitely count my blessings. Lots of hard work, the lottery of good health, plus the rub of the green with a couple of good redundancies have all helped...
I'd say those figures are on the high side of what is required. But I do live in an area of generally low costs, maybe they are more based on requirements for the home counties and London?
We...
This is the amount on top, consisting of a tax free lump sum plus a package that would be occasionally offered in small numbers to the most senior (in terms of service not age) staff.

Indeed, your health post retirement is beyond priceless.

Even before the factory got into trouble I planned to finish at 55, and I'd have 67 year olds saying "think of all the money you'll lose". I'd say I wouldn't be losing a penny as I wouldn't have gone...
With you completely on your concept of financial needs, I'm living exactly the same by the sounds of it.
Where I worked there were guys in their late 60s aswell who had acquired full final salary...
Sounds like you made the right choice!
I'm a couple of years shy of the full SP but when I looked a couple of years ago the amount I would have to pay to top it up, compared to the weekly rise it...
Worth doing when the opportunity presents itself, and surprising how far your money will go with a little cautious budgeting. If I hadn't taken voluntary I'd have been laid off this month anyway but...
Phew! Thanks. 55 in January, and have been living on (voluntary) redundancy money since last year, which will run out just as my pensions start in the new year. Another two years would have been...
