Perfume is horrible, but so engrossing.
I just read the second book in the Southern Reach Trilogy (annihilation, authority, acceptance), 6 months after I read Annihilation. Definitely not as good...
I thought the Hydrogen Sonata was Banks on auto-pilot. Not much in the way of new ideas, a few good fights, hoping for something better next time. But what I mean by better and what everyone else...
To give you a negative here, I don't like either of them. Admittedly I only read one of stross's, and only about half of perdido st station before I gave up.

I finally finally finally finished Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. I started it for the first time over 20 years ago, and tried several times since. It was rubbish.
The new Neal Stephenson, REAMDE, is pretty good. Very like Cryptonomicon, I thought, and no bad thing.
